The New Heights and Team NJ ABC grassroots programs are hosting the Summer In The City (SITC) AAU tournament later this month at St. John’s.

According to New Heights’ coach and athletic director Kimani Young, SITC will not only be a showcase for players but a welcome addition to the current summer landscape.

“We love traveling, but we also wanted to create an event that brought the experience home,” said Young. “We feel like New York is the center of the basketball universe and, as such, we thought there should be a tournament that capitalizes on that energy.”

Matt Pauls, the founder of Team NJABC says, “Our goal is to put on a quality event in partnership with our friends at New Heights. That means quality basketball, quality facilities, quality officiating and quality academic workshops.”

This year’s inaugural tournament will be held on July 28, 29, and 31 at St. John’s University. The invitation-only event will showcase some of the nations most talented 14/U, 15/U, 16/U and 17/U teams. College coaches from all over the country will be allowed to scout at the event.

Proceeds from Summer In The City will help support the programs at New Heights Youth, Inc, a NYC-based non-profit organization with a mission “to inspire inner city youth to be leaders, champions and student-athletes and empower them to be successful in high school, college and life.” (www.newheightsnyc.org) and Team NJABC, a program that focuses on developing young people into positive contributors to society. It's going on at roughly the same time as the major AAU tournament in Orlando. I hope it does well, but it's not much of a choice for kids: Disney World or Jamaica, Queens.

Your Summer in the City event at St. John's is quickly approaching; What marquee names (teams and players) have confirmed their participation? Is this event open to fans?

Kimani: We are extremely excited to be hosting the Summer In The City event out at St. John's. We have received confirmation from a majority of the elite teams in the Northeast including the NJ Playaz, Metro Hawks, Juice All-Stars, LI Panthers, NY Elite, Sports University, Westchester Hawks, Connecticut Basketball Club, LI Lightning, New Heights and Team NJABC. We'll have a tremendous collection of talent participating in this event with many of the players being ranked in the Top 100 in their respective classes by many of the scouting services and websites. You can look forward to watching Jayvaughn Pinkston, Ashton Pankey, Devon Collier, Isaiah Epps, Sterling Gibbs, Jermaine Sanders, Angel Nunez, Maurice Harkless, Sidiki Johnson and a host of many other talented young players.

I remeber attending a summer AAU tournament a couple of years ago at St. John's.

Malik and Justin were there. How is this one different from that one?

The whole joint will look different, especially the new ceiling and video board!

Seriously, this is the first year for this particular tourney. The earlier post by Classof2013 mentioned the teams and players who are going to be playing. It should be a good event at a place near and dear to all of us.

Did they finally put in a new ceiling or at least replace all of the missing tiles? It always reflects so poorly on the financial state of the school.

I didn't wind up going to the event but heard it was very successful. Hopefully this should build into something bigger next year. Any and every big coach in America was in attendance for this tournament as well.

It was successful... for Arizona. They got Sidiki Johnson to commit after the event. http://www.fiveborosports.com/ssp/news?news_id=3681

But when it came down to making a decision, it had more to do with what was on the table – a free education and chance to join a prestigious program synonymous with producing NBA players.

“I wanted to take advantage of the opportunity I had,” said Johnson, the rising junior who verbally committed to Arizona on Saturday, one day after playing in front of Richardson at Summer in the City, a one-day AAU event at St. John’s. “I had to go with my heart. I felt this is the place I want to be.”

Anyone have any feedback on if it was successful for St. John's? Obviously, we haven't signed anyone yet. However, did any kids add us to their lists?
