Choz,

Congrats on your engagement.

It did something similar a few years back. I had a civil wedding (not at City Hall) and planned on something more religous down the road.

My advice to you: If you have children before the religous marriage (like I did), things will get more complicated and harder to plan and execute that idea. Therefore, try and do the religous marriage ASAP if it's important to the both of you.

It's a bit strange that the church would care, since the city hall marriage would be perfectly legal and binding, meaning a child you had would not be born out of wedlock. Hopefully they didn't hassle you to the point where you thought of skipping the whole damn thing.

I grew up Catholic and have a big family, so I wanted a church and big wedding. My wife is not religious at all, and cheap, so she wanted nothing to do with a church or a fancy hall with 300 guests. I gave in and we ended up doing a Vegas wedding with my parents, my brother and his girlfriend, my wife's sister and husband, and 25 or so friends. Airfare, hotel, the chapel, and dinner for roughly 35 people cost me less than $3,500. Some bar/club in one of the hotels had a 70s night, so everyone ended up dancing to the same music I would have paid a DJ to play at a big wedding anyway.

Something like that would be my recommendation.

As nice as a quicky Vegas wedding in an Elvis chapel sounds, my recommendation would be that Mr Choz agree with everything his fiance says: whether to have fish or chicken or both; what vanilla cake or chocolate; live band vs DJ; seating chart; what kind of silverware pattern should they register for; etc, etc etc. It is her day after all, and pretending to listen to what she says and pretending to find enthralling her inane opinions will only be good practice for the marriage proper, when it counts.

If this were say a birthday party or a dinner party I'd say sure, take advice from a a guy on a basketball chat board, he probably knows the hell out of what women want, but weddings are special. At least the first couple three anyway.

Yeah I agree with Foad.  I mean you pick and choose your battles, if a certain food or music or whatever aspect of the wedding is really impt to you, then stand up for it, but defer EVERYTHING else to your lady. And don't tell them you don't care, tell them you agree with their decision and defer to their taste and judgment.

Happy wife, happy life.

Totally agree with the pick your battles thought process.

I had 325 people at my wedding and thru the entire planning process the only thing I insisted on was a DJ and not a band.

The rest of the time it was "what ever you want honey, its your day"

The wedding would be "legal and binding" but the Catholic church doesn't recognize the marriage. However, when I baptized my son, the Pastor was very understanding (he did though offer to marry us in the Church).

I'm not wearing pants right now, if that's what you're asking.

Did not know that. Luckily for my wife and I my father was ordained as a deacon after retiring from the corporate world, so we didn't have to go through any of that. We got to pick our own time for our daughter's baptism, and had the church to ourselves. My father was a bit of a tight ass about family members stepping into the aisle to take pictures for some reason, but it went smoothly otherwise.

Y'all realize, of course, that the day Choz ties the knot the ebonics are gone and he's posting in perfect King's english.
