Dele Coker

I am curious to know if anyone has any kind of info on him.

He seems to be the one who isn't talked about in any of the marketing that St. John's has done. He also hasn't been talked about that much on any of the sites and boards.

Again any info would be great... For instance:
Has he been hitting the weights? Has been in the Gym shooting around? Staying off of the fast food in Marillac? (joke)

Any decent info would be appreciated.

Tall kid from Nigeria. Plays C for St. John's.

I think people lost interest in him when he fouled out against LIU.

Regardless of the fact... he is a big with decent mobility. IMO... if he wanted to work hard... he could become a decent big man in the Big East.

Obviously he needs to work on a lot. However, I was hopefully that someone would have info on his progression this off season.

If Dele can get his footwork and timing to synchronize he can make a real difference in the game by blocking shots around the basket. I saw marked improvement in that department last year.

Dele has shown some flashes offensively, hopefully he can put it all together soon

I saw Dele recently (no I'm not Old Red) and he looked thin and cut.  Dele has good athletic ability.  He started playing basketball late and is behind in terms BB IQ.  Last year, he seemed to make good progress, mostly on the defensive end, in comparison to his Frosh year.  Hopefully he continues to improve.

I would say both. The staff should push him and give him the support he needs to develop. However, the player needs the drive and discipline to take what is being offered to him and make the most of it.

He did look in better shape his sophmore year versus his freshman year. Let's hope he continues that pace and polishes his game a bit.

At the bare minimum:

(1) I hope his IQ goes up where he doesn't make stupid fouls
(2) He learns to box out and rebound appropriately
(3) He can block some shots

It's not that complicated. He needs to play to get better.
Did the staff arrange for him to play any sort of organized bball this summer?

If they didn't, they made an error in judgement. What else is knew?

He has got to be the least productive returning player, but he plays a key position.
And as much as we may think we have guys that should play over him, Sean Evans and Rob Thomas can't guard a 7 footer.

He's only been playing organized basketball for a half a dozen years. Dikembe Mutombo didn't get it together until he was a 23 year old junior. Sure, Mutombo wasn't being tutored by the brilliant Fred Quartlebaum, but still, give him some time.

Lets keep in mind Dele didn't help himself when he was cutting classes and got suspended from the team. I don't think hope is lost with Dele

Coker was outplayed by every big man he faced.
Mutombo was a damn good as a freshman.

I think a better comparison would be Tom Bayne.

He led the Hoyas in field goal percentage (.709) and was fourth in the nation for blocked shots, with 128 on the season. In his senior year, Mutombo was named Big East defensive player of the year after he once again ranked fourth nationally in blocked shots and came in sixth in rebounds, with 12.2 per game.
