Felipe Lopez [nymagazine]
« on: November 19, 2009, 08:19:59 PM »
Felipe Lopez appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated before he'd ever played a single college game. The nation's top recruit, he was going to be the one to return St. John's to glory. But though he graduated as the Queens school's third all-time leading scorer, his Johnnies teams made just one NCAA Tournament, losing in the first round to Detroit in 1998. After being selected with the 24th pick in the draft, he went on to play for four seasons in the NBA, before playing in Spain, Venezuela, Mexico, and his native Dominican Republic. Today, he's an ambassador for NBA Cares, and the Sports Section caught up with him last night at the NBA Store, where he helped Allan Houston distribute coats to kids from Theresa's Haven, a Bronx homeless shelter.

When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

Such a class act.
I started reading the article and then said to myself 'he needs to coach here.  Then lo and behold the coaching question is brought up.  He really can show what you can accomplish after basketball as well.  I'm sure his NBA job is a cushy one but one day I'd really like to see him on our staff.  Or at least have our staff utilize him more.

All the best to Felipe

Class act says it all.  I actually flew to Chicago to witness the loss to Detroit, man that was a rough one!

He was a class act, but he had a 5 cent head for the game. Mahoney's zone offense didn't help either.

Not that I think St Johns would get rid of Norm, but what would you say about them hiring Rob Werdann as head coach, with Kenny Anderson and Felipe as assistants. ;)

Baldi, I'd go for Pecora, McKillop, Fran at Siena and maybe even Steve Lavin, but I wouldn't endorse the risk of bringing in a coach with no experience.

We hired a sleeper coach who get us sleeper talent that's still sleeping.

Baldi, don't talk crazy.

Poison - not that we necessarily have the right people evaluating (or maybe we do, i don't know), but I think you can hire the right sleeper coach.

Anyway, props to Felipe.  I used to wear my Felipe jersey in college - the one in the article... that was a damned ugly jersey.

Also like what he said about the Nets.  My brothers and I fell in love with the Derrick Coleman/ Drazen Petrovic squads, man.
