St. John's vs. Brown Post Game Thread

I didn't watch the game but saw the score and looked through the box score and it looks like a pretty bad performance.  Anyone see the game and can detail what happened?

Justin Burrell: 2 points and 2 boards.  What's going to wake this kid up?  He's been in a funk  for over about a year.  One of the excuses last year was that it was the mask he was wearing on his face.

what the hell happenned? Giving up that many points to Brown? Siena might hang a c note on us if that continues

1st half- SJU looked good. Gave up a 3 right off the tip, then played really good defense. Starters played well with energy. DJ looked real good. Many starters came out after first few minutes. Hardy scored 9 quick points then taken out after only about 3 minutes. Norm has a pregame plan just wish he would have left him in. He was hot. Brownlee is a beast. Quincy 1st guy off bench played well. Coker hustled. Burell didn't take shot until 12:00 left in 1st half. He didn't get much playing time. He did not play much in 2ND half. Stith looked nervous in 1st half.

2ND half- Brown hit a lot of shots. Game shouldn't have been as close as it was. Referrees were awful. People were going to riot. Refs kept Brown in game. Brown also hit their foul shots. Stith played better in 2ND half. Evans scored about 14 points, most off free throws BIG improvement. Game was sealed by big dunk by DJ and 2 Booth free throws. Booth played well, however missed 4 WIDE open jump shots. They weren't even guarding him.

Refs were that bad!

what the hell is everyone bitching about? at least were scoring (even against brown), you can improve your defense, hard to improve scoring. we can take siena next friday. this team bends...but will not break! djs dunk with less than a min was a sports center highlight.

I'll probably get criticized for this, but the score wasnt much of an indication of the game. Brown was just chucking up 3 after 3, I'm talking about some serious prayers, and most of the prayers were answered...theres just not really a defense for that. And as was stated, this could have been the worst officiated game I've ever seen in my entire life. We took a shot with 1-2 seconds left on the shot clock, the ball CLEARLY hit the rim and we rebounded the ball, but the refs ruled it was an airball and a shot clock violation. They even huddled together after the play and still decided it was a shot clock violation. When a game is called this closely, it just takes you off your game. You cant play nearly as aggressively as you normally would. Brown hit their 3s and their free throws and that's what made the game close, but if the refs weren't calling it so tightly (and it wasn't being called both ways either) it wouldn't have been NEARLY as close as it was

Siena is gonna beat us by 10+ points easy.  Why?  Because unlike St. John's, they have a competent in game coach on the bench.

Sorry, but tonight's effort was terrible, win or not. This team needs to show a killer instinct and the coach needs to settle on a rotation and not sub kids in and out like it's a hockey game. I would be shocked if we don't lose to both Siena and Temple at this rate.

If we lost that game, there literally would have been a riot, for anyone who wasn't at the game, after the buzzer Norm didn't head for the handshake line, instead he went right after the refs walking off the court.  I'm actually gonna applaud him for keeping his cool and not getting T'd up because I know if I was the coach of the team, I would have gotten ejected after some of those calls.  A plus was Sean Evan's free throw shooting.  What a remarkable improvement he has made on the line.

Great synopsis of the game TonyD.  I hate to use Refs as an excuse but they were atrocious.  It really hampered our ability to play D.  I haven't looked at box scores since getting back from the game but Brown shot very well from the outside and the were excellent from the free throw line.

For us, Burrell seems totally lost on both ends of the floor.  I hope he gets it together.  Evans was incredible from the free throw line, considering how bad he was last year.  I love Hardy's game.  He is an incredible shooter.  Brownlee really plays good interior defense.  His arms seem incredibly long and he plays bigger than he is.

Booooooooothe...actually I believe the shot clock violation was overruled.  The ball had gone out of bounds and the Refs couldn't decide who touched it last so Brown got it on the alternate possession.  The possession arrow changed after they inbounded the ball.  The crowd was upset but the Refs got that one right.

I saw a lot of Brown players cutting to the hoop freely.  That's not a prayer and that's not officiating.  That is bad defense.  I also saw a number of Brown players set and already shooting by the time the St. John's player came to close out. 

It was an iffy performance and the coach will yell at his players, but for me, it's a real cause for concern if a team that has been playing together for 3 years (that's just unheard of!) can't play constant effective defense.  It's possible the scheme could be different... but I don't think so.  It looks like last year, where the defense looked mediocre-to-awful at times.

Brown hit 7 3's we hit 5.  Wow, St Johns was 18-20 from the free throw line?   What was up with Horne tonight? 6 shots?

I was afraid of this more than anything else.  Horne is such a big part of the team.  It is really his team with DJ.  Norm has to keep him in the flow of things and use him and Hardy wisely.  It will get tougher when Mase comes back.  Norm will have to find a way to keep Horne-DJ-Brownlee-Hardy on the floor together for big stretches.

Well put - I fear that this team is being coached down, as opposed to coached up.

I agree, go with 4 guards and lets see what happens. Burrell needs to sit if he continues to be inaffective

Gotta put your best five on the cout.  If that happens to be Boothe/Stith-Hardy-Horne/Mason-DJ-Brownlee, then do it.  If Nova can make the Final Four with a four guard lineup and then again with a three-guard/two SF lineup, we can make it work with a beast like DJ and a jumping jack like Brownlee. 

I see no reason why DJ can't be as effective as 6'6 Lazar Hayward was for Marquette last year as a SF playing the four. 

It looks like either DJ or Hardy will have to get some time at the point or DJ or Mase will have to log big minutes at the four.  Paris needs 25 mins a game and DJ needs to be on the court for 30+.
