How do we beat Duke?
« on: December 03, 2009, 11:38:04 AM »
In my opinion a few things pop to my head instantly.

- Paris has to get going early.  It looks like he misses a shot or 2 early on and is thinking about it and starts forcing up crappier shots that have no chance to go in.

- Malik squared have to put strong pressure on their point guards.  Especially if it's Sheyer make him work and try your best to tire him out so that he doesn't ever feel comfortable.

- Someone from the bench has to get it going.  Knowing that we're probably going to get screwed from the opening tip with fouls someone is going to have to come in and provide a huge spark.

- I want to see our bigs just beat the hell out of theirs.  Make them uncomfortable and make them feel out of their element.

Ok those were just a few I thought of quickly, there is a million more I'm sure so lets hear it.

1) We need to dominate the boards.  Can't let Duke get second chances, and we probably WILL need second chances.  Duke shot horribly but beat UConn fairly easily bc their bigs did well for once.  We need to bang down low.

2) We need to stop 2 of Smith, Singler, and Scheyer.  When 2 of them are firing on all cylinders, this Duke team is VERY hard to beat.  Wisco stopped 2 of em and had a shot.  Uconn stopped 2 of em essentially yet it didnt matter much.  That said, if you only stop 1, bad news bears.

3) We need to have confidence and not be intimidated.  Some teams at Duke are in awe, caught flat footed, and next thing you know Duke's up 15 with 10 mins to go int he half and the game is essentially over.  You're not going to overcome a big deficit on the road in cameron.  Need to weather the storm and get through it only down a few buckets.

4)  We need to shoot well.

5) LIMIT turnovers.

If we do all of those things....then we have a shot to win, but will probably still lose.  But that's what we need to do.

The things we need to do are the basic things we need to do to win every game....

Limit Turnovers, Control the glass, shoot well...etc, etc...

But one thing I think we need to do, that we generally don't do is slow the game down.  And I don't mean because we don't have the horses because we do.  When the opportunity presents itself...then run.  But for the most part slow the game down and work for good shots.  Don't settle...we need to execute!!!

And just to clarify....I hope we get out and run this year, but I'm just saying for this game...we need to control the pace!!

1. They cannot be on fire from the three or the game is over

2. We have to create points in nonconventional ways:  defense/transition and putbacks

3. Have to hit 40% or better from three and 80% or better from the line

4. Great defensive pressure....DJ has to be on Singler

I think we'll see Evans on Singler. Evans defends perimeter guys better than he does down low.

i think we have to match up for defense because i dont think we can run on this team and we def cant outgun them. this is a game where we need paris, dj, and quincy to step up big because they are our best on the ball defenders. inside i would like to see some extra coker to defend the rim and be a force inside. i dont think stith or omari will offer much resistance and their minutes should be very limited.

offensively  there is no reason we shouldnt put the ball inside to our bigs and work inside out.  if we can limit turnovers and pack the offensive glass with tips we have a shot at this thing.

1. Don't lose site of your man. If you're cheating on help defense Duke will expose you. Even more so on the perimeter.

2. Contest every shot. Don't let them get open looks from 3. Be in their shorts for the entire game and wear them out. We're deeper.

3. Play fast but under control. We need to convert on our fast break opportunities. Get enough spacing to allow someone to create and prevent 1 Duke defender to be able to cover 2 guys at once.

4. Convert whether it be fast breaks or FT opportunities we can't give away easy points.

5. Don't be afraid. Go in guns blazing. Everyone is chalking this up as a loss so what do we have to lose? Just do the damn thing! Put the pressure right back onto Duke not to choke 2 games straight.

Singler would go for 40 on either Evans or Burrell.  It HAS to be Dj.

run these whimps out of the gym..duke is tall, lanky, and jump shooting team. They do not want to run, they want to play half court, and pick, and screen..Run, and they will lose..This is how Carolina whips their arses..We have more athletes, we have more depth..They have a bunch of slow tall doofy guys..
I would play hardy, booth, and kennedy, Burrell, and horne all together, and run, and pressure their weak handle guards.Sheyer, and Nolan are both 2 guards pretending to be pg's.Do you really think Duke can handle us on the break??
Keep switching up defenses on them..trap, play zone, and man up on them..press...really confuse this team..Plumlee is young, Zoubek is a stiff, Smith is lousy, Sheyer cant shoot deep on the move..DUKE IS OVERRATED.

1. Kidnap Ted Valentine and keep him locked in the closet until halftime.

2. Wear throw back uniforms with short shorts to distract and intimidate DeWk players.

3. Unveil new SJ mascot, the Farmer's Wife, who waves her huge carving knife at Shrewshenski's tail during crucial game situations.

4. Distribute free six packs of Roofie laced Zimas to Cameron crazies to negate home court  advantage.

5. Enlist Crystal Gail Mangum to choreograph dance squad routines; name Mike Nifong Head of Basketball Operations.

Kid... Your right. I didn't see that one.

Being serious...

(1) I think Coker could play a nice role in this game if he doesn't make cheap fouls and really punishes someone from trying to score down low.
(2) Mix the defense up well and use our depth at the guard position. Try to press when we can to get their guards tired. If their legs are tired, it should be harder for them to the outside shot.
And the obvious....
(3) We need to hit a good % of shots and free throws this game. We have had good games and bad ones.
(4) We need to limit the turnovers
(5) Rebound, rebound, rebound!
(6) Score/execute in transition

offensively  there is no reason we shouldnt put the ball inside to our bigs and work inside out.  if we can limit turnovers and pack the offensive glass with tips we have a shot at this thing.

we never work the ball inside out. ever. we should. but we never do.
why? because of norm roberts. in our half court offense, all we do is stand with 4 guys along the perimeter and pass back and forth.

you think they would try to work down low on lesser opponents in stony brook or brown, but instead we try to drive or shoot jump shots.

there has been a lot of talk about small line ups but what about playing big on teams and pounding the ball inside...hardy,dj,brownlee,jb,evans/coker...play a 1-3-1 on the other end and that is a zone with a lot of long arms and big bodies trapping the ball.

I think similar to what Temple did against you guys, foul trouble really hurt the team.

And I think we know what Duke + Home + Officiating equals..

Someone needs to literally smack Singler in the mouth within the first 30 seconds, and hope it throws him off his game long enough that we can take advantage.
