Lazy Sean Evans?
« on: December 06, 2009, 11:09:46 AM »
Sean had a great game overall...but did other people notice how SLOW he is to get back on D and how SLOW he is to rotate?  It was shocking to see out of a high energy hustle guy!  I've only seen 2 games on tv this year so maybe this is standard, but I was really disappointed with his lack of energy getting back on D, esp. after misses.  He was often the last one up the court.  If it's because he isn't conditioned totally yet, he needs to be subbed out, we have too many guys to play for that to happen.

He's got so much talent, but needs work on the fundamentals like boxing out, man to man defense, and passing out of the double team.

I don't know if I'd say it's "laziness" rather I think he suffers from a lack of awareness defensively. Sometimes Sean gets a little lackadaisical defensively in the post losing track of his man. This is why I prefer Burrell to take on bigger defensive assignments.

Also I thought it would have been a good idea putting Evans on Singler yesterday to really make him focus defensively. Sean has good enough foot speed to stay with him on the perimeter and enough strength to prevent him from penetrating.

Overall Sean needs to improve upon his in game focus. This includes FT's 1-6 yesterday is unacceptable. How many times did he have an and1 and not sink the FT? That's so costly and by the time conference play comes around people are just going to hack the heck out of him making our team come up with either 0-1 point possessions.

I like Sean a lot and thing he has a ton of potential(He's very good now and he has more potential). He just needs to put in extra time working on some small fundamentals and also becoming more of a student of the game. I thought he played awesome though yesterday. He can be a serious problem for opposing teams.

getting back on d very slowly after making a move on the offensive end is pure laziness.   the rotations I agree are prob a lack of awareness.

I'll have to watch the game again today to make a fair criticism. I didn't notice it first time around.

I think it's silly to put this negative label - 'lazy' - on someone that works so hard on the court.

Are there areas of his game that need improvement? Of course. But it's absurd to attribute those areas to 'laziness'.

When he watched that rebound yesterday bouncing on the floor in the second half in stead of going after it, i was FURIOUS. It's not an issue of him being soft, I think it's either what Dave said (not being aware) or he takes a few plays off.

I have two theories on his lack a defensive rotations issues.

1. he is a relative new comer to the game of basketball, so it is possible his bball IQ needs improvement.

2. the second is that he used to commit some dumb fouls in past years. now that we and he realizes that he needs to be on the floor for us the be our most effective, it is possible he is being cautious not to get silly foul calls.(Plus he is usually good for at least one offensive charge per game, so he only gets 4 fouls per game for D lol)

He is not Lazy. Sean had to play more minutes yesterday because of Burrell getting hurt.

I agree... I anyone who shoots free throws at less than a 60% rate in a game should be forced to watch this clip the following day for 3 hours straight.   :D

The ONLY explanation for someone who multiple times was SLOW and did not hustle getting back on defense after he made a move on offense is LAZINESS.  Its shocking bc Sean hustles so much, but there is no other explanation for it...unless he's just so tired, in which case he can't play as many minutes...but it was happening in the first half...

I love Sean, think he's a great player, but moments like I saw yest. are inexcusable and detract from all of the great things he does.

I definitely noticed this with Evans.  Even as a team we are horrible with this.  I can't tell you how many times I saw a player hit the floor on the offensive end and then get up and jog back while Duke had a 5-4.

Boothe was guilty of this a few times as well.

i was at the duke game and i can tell you sean was winded.  he played a lot!  there was one particular occassion where he asked norm to take him out.  the kid was exhausted.  i actually thought given the circumstances he played hard. he was by far was the quickest big man on the court.  by no means would i say he's lazy.

additionally, i think our guys got tired.  even with the added bench, duke made our guys run. duke did a great job moving without the ball. and i think that had something to do with us getting out hustled with the rebounds and loose balls.

i think thats where we missed JB, Mase, and Rob the most.  They could have give us some valuable minutes.
