St. John's vs Cornell Post Game Discussion

I want to make it clear I like Paris and think he needs an important role on the team.  The problem with him right now is all on the offensive side of the ball:

-He has been in a shooting slump for the whole year

-The vast majority of his shots are threes or jumpers a foot or two inside the line.

- He doesnt get to the line, because he rarely drives the basket and doesnt keep the defense honest.

The result of this is a 38% FG a 32 3P% and 1.0 points per shot, which is subpar.  Combine those numbers plus the fact that you are never getting to the line for free points and it's pretty obvious there is a lack of offensive efficiency.   

He still has a big need on this team, and we def need him defensively and on breaks.  I just think he needs to stop settling for outside jumpers when he isnt shooting well.  It could all change, but right now, he has to try and take it to the hoop if the jumpers arent falling.   

im gonna say this alot of people on all 2sites are now getting on paris. when lst year alot of yall had a man crush on him. that aint right.he is struggling because he doesnt understand his role. they are gonna need him.

Everything bad about last night's game has pretty much been said here, so it does not need repeating. My 2 biggest problems from last night was this....

- Yes, Cornell shot the ball at an unreal clip. 60% from 3 with that many attempts is unheard of. However, how many of these were uncontested, wide open shots. I want to say that our players got away from their 'defensive principles', as DJ put it in the postgame, but in my heart I want to blame it on the head coach. As a fan just watching the Davidson-Cornell game on Sunday, I could have told you that to beat the Big Red all you have to do is get up on the shooters, stay home on your man, and make them beat you with the dribble. That should have been preached to the players while they were watching the game from the sidelines on Sunday afternoon (which they were up until about 8 mins left in the game) as well as all day on Monday and throughout the game. It really is that simple, we're too athletic for them. There was no need to help anywhere. If our guys are getting beat off the dribble by the Ryan Wittman's of the world, what is gonna happen come BE play? I would have let the big man beat us, if thats what they wanted to do. No need to be helping out and leaving shooters wide open from 3. Although the end of the 1st half showed us up 5, there was a good stretch during the first 10 mins of the game where all of their points were either from 3 or the foul line. I knew right there, that the defensive gameplan by genius Norm was not correct. And it showed its face again with 1 min left, when Brownlee is caught in no man's land helping for no reason and his man is left wide open for the dagger 3. Too much running out at shooters, we should have never left them. Should have played small and switched on everything.

- The 2nd thing is rather simple. 10 seconds left on the shot clock after we cant get into our "offense", ball has to be put in DJ's hands at the top of the key. No one else's. Period.

GREAT post.  It makes me sick when people just say Cornell had an unreal night and don't acknowledge the fact that they were WIDE open for many of those shots!

Bingo!  We have a winner!

Yes, many of the 3's hit by Cornell were good looks.

But the fact of the matter is that the Red had a very imposing outside AND INSIDE game going and had us in a pick your poison position the entire night.

Evans and Dele were unable to handle the big man one on one so we had to slump off somewhat to respect that (not 1, not 2, but 3 slam dunk and ones).  Plus,  that center is a great passer.  He throws 50 foot passes to the other side of the floor right at a spot up 3 point shooter, no problem.

We were damned if you do damned if you don't.  Cornell showed me a lot this game.

How about this?  Perhaps Cornell was in better shape than us?  Our man D was duller than it has been all year.  Perhaps we didn't have enough legs to go hard at it on back to back nights?

One thing, though, Carmine - the team has done this thing that pisses me off but can work, where they let one post player just have his way.  Nicholson, Gaston, others.  So why send Foote to the line at all?  Why didn't Coker and Evans know when they were beat and let him get his little 2 points?  If you can't keep Foote outside of 5 feet from the basket, contest, but don't foul; the danger is Wittman and, apparently, Jaques (never knew he was that good). 

Personally, I don't like the constant switching on defense.  Doesn't seem to produce much for the Johnnies.

Cornell played awesome, and I was surprised they didn't knock someone else off this year already; they're a very good team.  I would hope that with all this depth we don't have dead leg problems, playing against a team that is mostly jump shooters (though I do think the guys expend a lot of energy overplaying and getting back into position).

Meanwhile, we have some holes, and I'd rather see them addressed now than in Big East play.  If this loss means St. John's has a competitive chance* in each of the Big East games, and wins 9 or more, I'm ok.

* I just don't want to see any of those games where the outcome's not in doubt from about 10 minutes in.  That is pathetic.  I'm not fanciful enough to think this team's winning the league, but they can lose by less than 10 points every time, not get clowned by U Conn, score more than 10 points in a half.  Things like that.

Jon Jaques  played a big role for Cornell last night. 20 point 5 of 6 from 3.

This kid did not play in the 1st 3 games for Cornell this year. He did not play in the Cornell game against Seton Hall. He also played only 1 minute against Syracuse.

Why did this kid have to pick the St. John's game to have a career game.

We should have won this game but I expected us to come in at 9-3 in non conference games and we have a good shot at 10-2. Bottomline is we need to play better because the level of competion in the BE is crazy. Frustrating yet I'm still excited about this year. Norm has to start shorten the rotation.

I am unbelievably disappointed.  The difference between dancing and NIT for this team could only be a game.  This might have been that game.  Now, we will have to win at Georgetown. It becomes a must have. 

We lost by five and Sean Evans had FIVE turnovers.  It's getting to the point I'm wondering if we can even keep him on the court.  Brownlee 0-2 again from three, shooting in the teens from there, but still has the green light?

This team needs JB1 and needs Mason Jr. BADLY.  We win last night with Mase.

"First Half" Dwight might be more appropriate than Dwight Buckets.

He scored 19 in 19 minutes! What else did you want him to do score from the bench? Norm also took him out when he was still on fire! Seriously bad coaching as far as X AND O's is one thing , Norm coaches as if he never played the game. Terrible feel for what is going on from game to game.
