Since Louie retired...
« on: December 22, 2009, 08:12:50 AM »
We've lost to a mid major or less than that every season, except one.

As embarrassing as this was to sit through, and as angry as we all are at Norm for sitting Hardy, these games, unfortunately are the new tradition at SJU.

Cornell, we should have beat, but then again,
a lot of other teams "should have" beat them too.

And didn't.

It doesn't make this loss okay, but at least, we can see
that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. More Hardy, and maybe more Thomas. Norm is learning on the job, and he's learning what he has.

This is still his make or break year, and he'll either learn to stick with the hot hand, or he'll relive this game.

I nominate this for the annual Norm Roberts needs to win THIS year or he's fired first declaration of the season.  Maybe one year someone will be right.

"Since Louie retired" the mid-major line has blurred and disappeared.

Every year there are many of the old "mid majors" who are top 50 or better teams.

Teams like Gonzaga, Cornell, Hofstra, Old Dominion, Siena etc have had teams thad would play 500 ball in the majors.Even Memphis was considered a mid 15 years ago I think.

I just looked at the current RPI's & seems like 20"mid majors" are in top 60.

Cornell has a current "Pom" RPI of 66.
Only 6 big East teams have an RPI under 50.

We went 5-1 (without Mase)vs teams w current RPI's 20-155.
Better than last year, and I would have signed up for it 4 months ago

And btw Georgetown just lost to Old Dominion (RPI 18)
Louisville has lost to Nevada LV, Charlotte & Western Carolina.

Cornell has a very good team. It was not a BAD loss.
(We 've had plenty of those the last 5 years)

Steve, not a horrible loss, but it was bad.
We are St.John's. And it's about time we defended our court with some force. They had one lanky big man who we had no clue how to guard.

They ran the pick and roll, and it worked every time.
What would Syracuse, Nova and WV do to Cornell?

What would Syracuse, Nova and WV do to Cornell?

They are the top quarter of the Big East, which we are not (yet).

If you asked how SH, Louivsville, Rutgers, Marq, Cinn, Prov, DePaul & ND would have fared, Cornell might have gone 4-4.

Villanova  barely squeaked by 2 mid majors (& lost to Temple)

Which is worse- Our loss to Cornell (RPI 63)
or Pitt's loss to Indiana (RPI 168)
or Marquettes loss to NC State (RPI 97)

RPI's are misleading, but they carry more weight on selection Sunday than conference reputation

It doesn't matter what their RPI is.
They're an IVY, and we have to beat those teams.

Is a loss to NC State not as bad? Yes.
That's an ACC school, with legit athletes.
