Reasons For Optimism in the 2010-11 Season
« on: January 21, 2010, 02:13:37 PM »
Normally I appreciate sarcastic answers, but I'd like to know what the remaining St. John's feel are some realistic reasons for optimism in the 2010-11 season.

The only relative positive I see for next season specifically is simply the natural maturation and improvement of the existing junior class.

Here are few reasons to be optimistic:

Paul Hewitt
Steve Lavin
Matt Doherty
Kevin Kennedy
Jim Laranaga
Fran McCaffrey

Who's Kevin Kennedy?  And why would anyone be optimistic about Lavin or even worse, Doherty?!  Larranaga didn't even go for the Providence job...

Anyway, optimism: improvement from Malik Stith forces Malik Boothe to the bench.  Omari Lawrence becomes a foul-drawing beast (a la Sean Mosley of Maryland.  I think it's very plausible.  Wrote about it a while back.).  Someone realizes that Dele Coker can play 20 minutes and he holds down the interior.  Quincy or Hardy get a lot of time and prove to be excellent scoring threats.  Burrell's light goes in with respect to rebounding.

Those are possibilities.

Norm brings in an associate head coach who is an X and O genius. Also you have to be excited about the Big East dumping more talent while we return all of ours. Harangody, Monroe, All of Syracuse, All of UConn, Samuels, Scottie Reynolds, Ebanks, Butler, etc. will all be graduated or leaving early. It's a fact.

I thought that was this years theme? The problem with this theory is the other schools are well coached with good recruiters.  Besides our talent has known nothing but losing.

I fell for that this year hook, line and sinker.  Hence my 9 and 9 conference prediction. If we don't beat Nova or Pitt, my awesome run of predicting is in deep jeapordy.

Syracuse, like all of the other big east powers just reloads.
THIS was supposed to be their down year. Remember when fans here were saying we'd beat them in the dome?

We could lose by 50.

what kind of program hopes the rest of the conference sucks so we can move up?
it's more realistic for us to join the maac.
if you're hoping for 18-20 win seasons every year with no impact or relevance on the national scene, we can get there with norm.
we'll NEVER be better than that.  no how no way.

Pitt is another good example.  a team everyone thought we should beat this year,  they lost everyone, down year   etc....Goes to show you what a difference a great coach can make.  Dixon is a great coach IMO.

I believe we're a tournament team next year.  BUT that's not enough to keep Norm around IMO because in 2011-12 we lose almost all of our guys because of our scholarship mismanagement.

My excitement for next year is trumped by my disappointment at what will likely happen the following 2 years.

Norm will never coach an NCAA tourney game!

Even if we made the NCAA this would be true.  What he'd be doing on the sidelines cannot be called "coaching."

I also hate that way of thinking, as well, newsie....  Hoping to get better due to attrition.  Norm thought that was the case the Johnnies would be better this season because other teams lost key players.

He must've forgot he can't coach worth a lick and it doesn't matter who leaves from other programs.  That's a losers mentality, Dave.  Sorry, man!

Get better because you are better prepared and have sufficient talent....  And, if other teams lose players on top of that....  So, be it!

Face it....  Norm will still find a way to muck it up, regardless who leaves other programs.

Sorry Dave, this is complete BS.  Norm should have brough in an X and O's "genius" year two...not year SEVEN.  He's gone.

Two words:  Fran McCaffrey

The guy is amazing.  He loses an NBA caliber player (his best all-around player) and he just reloads.  Siena goes through a tough spell and we all think they are down, them BAM.  They win ten straight and jump out 8-0 against like teams in their conference.

He is personable, he is intelligent, he has WON, he has a style of play that will both suit our team next year and attract top talent (especially point guards) to run and gun.
