Who do we want as our new coach?
« on: February 04, 2010, 09:54:32 PM »
Everyone give your top five...

(1) Pitino - A huge reach, but he'd be awesome, and he is probably itching to get out of Louisville after the last year and with the lack of Pitino-type talent nextyear.

(2) McCaffrey - Not the same type of name as Pitino, but he has everything else

(3) Knight/Cluess - Bob Knight would be amazing with this current group.  Bring in Cluess as his heir-apparent, and we could be in good shape for a long time.

(4) Pecora - Losing steam, but a great guy and would be a solid hire.  No risk.

(5) Mark Jackson - risky, but the reward could be amazing.

Others - Greenburg,

Any chance RonRon retires and we make him the coach? One thing would be certain, it would be entertaining to watch.

(This is obvious a joke)

mccaffrey is such an obvious choice for me (besides names such as pitino). he has shown that he can recruit the area and he would probably bring in his two recruits he has on the way who im sure will both be good players. His eye for talent has proven to be great, moore franklin hasbrouk and rossiter were all unheard of and have become all league players. St johns needs to put together a package for this man!

No brainer. Should be absolutely the 1st phone call. Not sure he wants to coach again. He likes Red though.   Forget guys like Pitino.  that ship has sailed.

Sure would be fun to see what MR. Discipline would would do with this undisciplined team's offense and defense. WE would then get to see just what they are capable of.

Half these kids would burst into tears the first time Knight screamed at them and the rest would shit their pants.

I think he'd put DJ in the NBA.  I also think DJ and Sean would respond well to his coaching because of their football pedigree.  I don't think Justin would mesh well, because I can only imagine the things Knight would call him everytime he lost a 50/50 ball.

Coach Knight runs some fantastic fastbreak drills.  He'd do wonders with this squad.

Can you name a great NBA player Knight has turned out other than Isiah - who left IU as soon as possible? I can't. I can barely think of a good one. Anyone better than Calbert Chaney? Then there's a rapid drop off to slugs like Kent Benson and Uwe Blob. Much like his protege Screwshenski, Knight's system was designed to win in college and glorify the coach. It wasn't designed to turn out NBA players and it didn't, not in the way Wooden or Dean Smith did. Don't get me wrong, he's a great coach and SJ would be lucky to have him. But he's not a maker of NBA players. All of which is moot because there's no way he ends up at SJ anyway.

Chany not being a better pro surprised me. His best other than Isiah might be one of his teamates Mike Woodson or Randy Wittman.

I don't think DJ would be a great NBA player anway.  His ceiling is probably a marginal NBA player that can hang around for 6-8 years do to court savvy and toughness.

Questions for KOB. How would the NYC basketball HS and AAU coaches respond to a guy like Fran McCaffery. He's a winner (taken 3 teams to the tournament), seems to be respected by his players, not from NY but is from Philly. Would he have a chance to recruit successfully here ? What about promoting Oz Cross if Norm is gone ? One more question......noticed that McCaffery has an assistant, Andrew Francis, originally from Brooklyn went to Lincoln H.S., and was also an administrative assistant on Jay Wright's staff at Nova. Is he known at all in NYC ? Thanks for your insight.
