Basketball Committee for New Coach
« on: February 09, 2010, 11:20:44 AM »
I'm surprised no one's commented on this here yet.  PMG came up huge with some inside info that he posted on BEB yesterday:

http://www.bigeastboards.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=55381

The gist of it is:

Quote from: PMG911
Still trying to confirm the details about this but I heard it from a usually reliable source that Monasch has formed a "Basketball Committee" to help in the search for a new coach.

I was told it is made up of: Chris Monasch, Jim Burke, Mike Repole, Brian Colleary, Brian Shea

This is GREAT news --- means the ball is rolling.  Now having those big money guys (Repole = Vitamin Water guy) COULD definitely help us get a big time coach who wants more $$....or it could turn into a Riley situation where they love a local guy who we may not love and their money could be somewhat tied to it.  Regardless, anything is better than Norm right now.

I hope this means we're willing to spend 1-2 mil on a new coach....we'd become legit in the eyes of many if we're $pending!

It's only huge inside info if it's true.

I’m not sure what makes you even remotely optimistic that the school is ready to spend 1-2 million dollars, but I guess we can all have our own hopes and dreams.

I only question it because New York Magazine had Norm’s salary listed at $300,000 in 2005, so even considering the merit raises and performances bonuses he has received since then, your figure would be a real substantial jump for this school to commit to.

RSHF --- with 3 big time players on the committee, perhaps they will make personal gifts to the R&W club contingent upon the hiring of a coach at a certain salary.  It's certainly possible.

St Johns has paid before - Jarvis made decent money.  Roberts didn't even deserve the salary he got.

Ever the pessimist, Poison.  Do you have any information which makes you believe it is not true?  Has PMG ever provided this specific information which was false?

I'll credit PMG now.  He got some info, shared it with us, AND provided specific details.  That's more than pretty much everyone else can say.  Thanks PMG.

I agree,  you wouldn't post this unless you were almost certain of its validity. I have to believe it to be true,  for my own sanity, if nothing else.  Thanks for the one bright light all hoops season pmg!

Okay, okay. Fair point. It's just that it's been 6 years, and all we hear from the school is that Norm is their guy.

I might be able to get some info on the matter, but my contacts are worried for their jobs as well. It takes somebig balls to openly rip your employer

PMG qualifies it as a rumor that he hasn't been able to confirm.  Why does everyone assume its true?  Perhaps there is someone close to the program that hopes they do something like this and a rumor gets started.

That being said...Let's hope its true.  Our only hope is if a generous big time booster opens their wallet to pay for someone's salary.  Jarvis made a $1 million a year...to get a big time name we will need at least twice as much.

Because if Mike Repole is the type of guy I think he is (after reading some stuff about him the last few days), he is very similar to a lot of guys on this board.  He grew up loving this program, he went to STJ and was a Sports Management major, he seems like a guy that competes in everything he does.  He has so much money that even if he had to fit the entire bill for a 2 million dollar coach, it would have a negligible impact on his bank account.

I know if I had a fraction of the money and influence he has, I wouldn't settle for anything less than the best coach.

I don't know much about Jim Burke or Brian Shea, but it can't hurt having them either.
