Pregame + Predictions: Louisville
« on: February 10, 2010, 01:39:02 PM »
On Thursday evening, St. John’s will honor the 25th anniversary of the 1985 Final Four team at halftime of the Louisville game. It will be another stark contrast of the heights the program once reached to the struggles the program has experienced through much of the last 18 years, and to the struggles of the current Red Storm squad. Can St. John’s take a little inspiration and knock off the Louisville Cardinals at home?

The Cardinals are the first of three opponents St. John’s will face twice this season. Since the last contest (you can read the Johnny Jungle breakdown of the earlier game as well), St. John’s has returned Anthony Mason Jr. to full game action, has won 2 but lost 5 games, has heard “Fire Roberts” chants during games, and has struggled to maintain leads (but at least they are getting leads). Meanwhile, Louisville has gone 3-4, with 3 road losses. They have been allowing a large number of free throw attempts, high 3-point shooting efficiency, and a fair amount of second chances for opponents.

Unlike in some of the recent games, St. John’s has a chance in this one. But can they take advantage?  There are players who are playing well (see the player notes below), and hopefully, they will see some more time this evening.  The rotation as it is hasn’t been winning, perhaps it’s time to play some guys a little more and see what they can do.

Game Information

Tip Off: 7:00 PM, Thursday, February 10
Location: Madison Square Garden
TV: ESPN2
Radio: Bloomberg 1130/ WSJU

They will honor the 1985 Final Four Team, or will they spit on their memory by throwing the game away, again?

I predict we come out gunning looking more like Louisville than our usual pathetic selves. 37-29 at the half. In the closing seconds, Sean Evans fouls Swopshire, after a wide open lay up as time expires. He makes the free throw.

Rick Pitino forces his team to walk back to Louisville because of their poor play at MSG.

Justin Burrell will not play more than 22 minutes.

Dwight Hardy will not play more than 21 minutes.

Therefore, we will lose by 10+.

Hardy will play more then 21 minutes. Burell may or may not play 22 minutes. Cant see us staying within 10. Cant understand how anyone who has seen this team recently thinks we are going to win. I will be watching and rooting hard for a W. But we are better off losing and losing BIG. SJU has lead at half time and once again opposing coach makes adjustments and we lose again.

This would be a win in a typical Norm year.  It fits in his usual pattern so nicely:  lose and embarass the fanbase, but then pull of an unexpected win against a solid team to put a little doubt in the minds of those on the fence about his coaching limitations.

This is the first team that Norm has that has a confidence problem.  When they lost last year they chalked it up to being young.  This year they realize they are just a bad team and almost expect to lose.  I think it is due to two primary factors:  1. PT is not as abundent and players don't know when/why they get pulled 2. Norm and staff know they are goners and are consciously or subconsciously passing that negativity to the team

I asked 5 questions to Louisville blogger Card Chronicle (more here), but here are 2 opinions on the Pitino question and on what Pitino said before the last game about the league not needing St. John's to be strong.  And check out Card Chronicle.

4. Last summer Rick Pitino was in the news, and everyone knows why… what’s the feeling on the coach these days? Does his impropriety pop up in conversation about the team? Has it affected the fans, the team, or the school in any way?

Interesting you should ask, given all the hub-ub about his reported interest in the Nets job this morning.

I think the impact of the scandal has affected things far less than everyone thought it would when the story originally broke. I stated my concern before the season that if the team started to lose games, everyone in the country would start writing stories about how Pitino had hurt the program, etc. Well, Louisville’s already lost eight times and the focus has primarily remained on the team’s floor play.

Pitino has been forgiven and handed the benefit of the doubt by the majority of the fan base, although there is certainly a faction that wouldn’t care to see him head elsewhere.

5. Before the last meeting, Rick Pitino spent a minute talking about how the league didn’t need St. John’s to be good. Do you think this is true? Is there benefit to having a strong St. John’s in the league as it’s currently constituted (obviously, the pre-Louisville Big East would want St. John’s to be a marquee program)?

This is a difficult question for me to answer since (no offense) St. John’s has not been very good since Louisville made the move to the Big East. The conference has received as much praise and attention over the past couple of seasons as I can ever remember, so I guess I would have to side with Pitino and say that the league doesn’t really need a strong Red Storm team to thrive.

Louisville isn't that good this shouldn't be considered an upset win if in fact we do win.

Sorry to say, but I think it's at the point now where if we win any game, other than Depaul it would be an upset. SJU is the consensus second worst team in the BE.

We may being playing the worst basketball but that doesn't mean we are the worst. We have talent on this team and I truly believe we are more talented than Louisville (seriously, no homer). I think Louisville is a better prepared and coached team.

This is why it's an upset.

And there's no way we're MORE talented than Louisville.  Perhaps similar.
