What on earth would be different about hiring a coach who was a good/ great player, but has no experience in recruiting, teaching youngsters how to play the game, developing game plans, maintaining discipline, crafting training strategies, and dealing with the press/ alums/ administration?
There's a lot more to the game than knowing how to use one's own physical abilities; you can see that some players become bad coaches, and some become good coaches - no correlation. Or in baseball, where great hitters aren't necessarily great coaches. They're still great hitters. But hitting and teaching hitting are very different.
