Well don't mistake this for me jumping on Norm's bandwagon but he did outcoach Mike Brey last night. Brey was out of timeouts and Norm used his to set up a couple of clutch plays.

The ND offense is centered around Harangody.  If Harangody plays, this game is a blow out.  He outcoached a short-handed Brey.  Big whoop.

I only got to watch the second half last night.  Hate to say it, but i actually thought i was watching decent basketball for the 1st time in a long time.
Didn't look at numbers, so i may be wrong.  I thought they took care of the basketball much better. Boothe has played much better last few games.  I even saw him hit a shot or two.  Mase's TO at the end was bad, but whatever.  Evans barely played in 2nd half if memory serves, hence, lack of turnovers?
Mase has made a difference, especially on the boards, He's the teams best rebounder, without question.  Burrell looks like a man again.
All that said,  ND without Harangody is not a good team.  Still a road win in the BE is just that.
Anyone else getting the feeling this team is gonna play well down the stretch and teflon Norm will be back?  I do.  :'(

I don't.

Notre Dame's defense is like DePaul's defense last year - they make everyone look good.  I think they played better D than with Harangody but boy, they have no rebounders on the floor.  Sans Harangody, they're a bottom 4 in BE team.

Im not sure I agree with you on brey being a GREAT coach.  He is a good coach who always has his team on the NCAA bubble or sometime good enough to lose first round.  And I'd kill for that at St.J right now.  But me and my boys were talking about who we would want to succeed Coach K whenever he leaves, and in terms of the former duke players/assistants, it was tough to evaluate Brey.  Is NCAA bubble/first round his ceiling as a coach, or is that his ceiling at ND - a football school and not a huge public u - in the big east with tonso of HOF coaches..I'm not really sure.

Do you think Brey is an elite coach at another school with more focus on basketball?

I like Brey is a very good coach but maybe not the best recruiter. His teams have always overachieved which points to him being a very good coach.

as kid said, i think the celebrating by SJU was a bit over the top.  ND without harangody is a bottom 4 team in the big east.  and youre gonna pick up your coach and carry him around the lockerroom after a 1 point win?? a bit much.

Who cares? So they did that. They were excited. Let them be excited they are kids. I'm not one to curb their enthusiasm. Just the other day Dele Coker had on his facebook how basketball wasn't fun anymore I'd be more concerned about that than them celebrating a win in the locker room.

Dave, I agree with you.  I'm just hoping the people making decisions are not influenced by the fact that Norm's players like him.  At the end of the day, this is a business and Harrington and Monasch need to start treating it like one.

As Michael Corleone said ... it's not personal, it's strictly business.

overachieved?  I'm not sure...they never overachieve when it comes to tourney time....they beat the teams they SHOULD beat and steal a win or two. That's the kind of coach we should have at the worst.

The recruiting is actually ok, I think.  He's gotten some players over the years - the Chrises (Thomas + Quinn), Russ Carter, Luke Harangody, Rob Kurz, McAlarney.  But damn, they need to teach some defense out there.  Or get a shot blocker.  Their defense has been soft for years.

I thought Thomas was a Doherty recruit.

Thomas came in 2001 (and won Mr. Basketball in 01), Brey was hired for the 2000-01 season.  I assume he was a Brey recruit, but I don't remember if Doherty had gotten an early commit from him.

They are good players Peter but are they great? When has ND landed a big fish? or big fish consistently?

Give Brey a Nova or Cuse like players and he'd certainly get more attention.

That's Brey's job to get them.  Perhaps its the difference between football school v. basketball schools - thats what i wonder.

kid,
you seem a little bitter this morning.  so what we beat a team and some of us were happy about it. so what, harangrody didnt play, burrell our best interior player didnt play against our loss against cornell or duke, i think we would have blown both the teams out, right?

people on here are too short sibghted.  Don't compare harangody and burrell - it makes you sound like you are an idiot.  Do you doubt ND wins by 10+ if Hranagody plays?  We're talkin about the BE player of the year.

If Rob Thomas never blows out his knee, he puts up 18 and 9, and makes BE first team this year.

Injuries are part of the game. Harangody got hurt. TFB. The win counts just the same, and anyone who thinks it means less should get their head out of their ass.

kinnda like when we took it to them at the garden last year? we ar capable of beating nd with harangrody.  either way ND was favored by 5 and lost. what do you want? like i said, if burrell was not hurt in that duke game, we wuld have won by 15, right kid? if rosario didnt have the game of his live against us, we would have beaten RU, if louisville didnt have the pitino distrations, they would have beaten us....

you sound like baldi talking about escalades, $$$, and also $$$.....

dont forget if showtime was not injured 3 years ago, we would have made the final 4!
