Anyone else find it encouraging that the school is giving Ron a buyout of his contract?
  1.  the school is actually willing to buyout someone
  2. One less guy in Norms corner come end of season
  3. finally, maybe a changing of the b-ball hierarchy at st. john's.

   food for thought

It's like reading tea leaves at this point. I'll take anything! This is the guy who said "He can't recruit 125st" right? If so, so long pal don't let the door hit you on the way out!

Only the usual racists.

The university offered buyouts to 45 percent of its senior full time employees. The separations are voluntary. They have nothing to do with the basketball program.

If anything, that the university is willing to lose senior tenured faculty as a cost cutting measure is exactly the opposite of evidence that they're going to swallow Norm's contract and replace him with a more expensive name.

Ron Rutledge...the boogey man.  Gotta love message boards.

Foad, I also heard that about the faculty.  It's not a good sign in terms of firing Norm, but if the rumors of Mike Repole (Vitamin Water guy) donating big money to the program for a coach, then it's not an issue.  We'll see.

Not sure what race has to do with it. But thanks for the info.

An unfortunate choice of words.

Then you're not paying attention. The alleged "can't recruit above 125th street" comment about McKillop is attributed to RR. Others allege that RR lobbied for both Jarvis and Roberts solely because of their race. Just today on RM dot com someone said that Rutledge's employment at the university constituted "welfare." These are not subtle statements by subtle people. They're ignorant statements by ignoramuses.

Ron Rutledge's name is often associated with uttering a phantom phrase, never published in a paper, poo-poohing Bob McKillop (I believe) by saying "he can't recruit over 125th street", which some people seem to have taken to mean that St. John's wanted a black coach specifically.

At least that's how I understood it.  For some reason, he seems to be cast as a villain in the continuing mediocrity of St. John's basketball (but not Mahoney, who sits next to Louie every game).  If someone has more illumination, please let me know.

I see that Foad has commented on this as well.

So what youre saying is, Paul Hewitt will not be replacing Norm? ;)

It was the Maven who wrote that Rutledge allegedly said that Bob McKillop couldn't recruit above 125th street.

If RR, indeed, did say that, then it's good that Rutledge is no longer being paid by the university. If it is true that he said that, then it has been Davidson's great fortune [an Elite 8] and St. John's loss [six years of wasting time and money] for listening to a hustler.

rutledge symbolized the country club atmosphere that's been a cancer to the program going back to the mid 60s.

it's a bunch of guys hanging out without caring about the welfare of the program...and they get paid for it.
