Norm is coming back..
« on: March 13, 2010, 08:18:11 AM »
Thats what Im leaning towards. With the kids pining for him to stay, I bet they make a run in the NIT. That would mean the NCAA next year is an absolute must for Norm. If that doesnt work out, we still have Ron Roberts in the fold(probably the best recruit in years) and a bunch of scholarships and a fresh start with 2011 MAAC Champion coach Kevin Willard at the helm

So, this is today's theme Marco?  What makes you think he's coming back?  All the glowing endorsments? A few college kids pleading for their friend to comeback? Which is commendable , i might add.
Unless you are dispised, your kids are gonna fight for your job. Norm is being evaluted on a body of work, which has us missing the BE tourney every year without the rule change 2 years ago. It time to move on Marco.
I like your new schtick, where you now pick a part every potential candidate, its more fun. The Norm gig is up, my friend.

I didnt say I was rooting for this to happen. BUt lets face it, whose knocking down the door at St Johns to take the job? We need to come back to reality and realize that this isnt that big of a job anymore. Now if its true that the school has put "feelers" out there and McCaffrey declined and Greenberg said we cant afford him-who the hell is coming than?

Give it up Baldi.  Norm is a loser and wouldn't even finish in the top 10 of the Big East next year.  He flat out can't coach.  What has he shown you that would lead you to believe that he could make the NCAA tournament next season?  The guys on the team want him back that is great, I'm glad they are supporting their coach.  Fact is they will be much happier next year with a coach that knows basketball and runs a different offense against man to man and zone.

I'm willing to let the season end and the chips fall where they may. Can't believe everything you hear or read. For example,  Pinkston-  someone reports he's not eligible when in fact, its just some internet rumor monger spreading nonesense. ;)

OK, but who is coming? Ive seen alot of names mentioned and probably 3/4 arent in the tournament either, in weaker conferences. So how are they going to come to the Big East and win?

We'll see about Pinkston. Time will tell. I wonder how a 5'3 oriental student can pass for a Jayvaughn Pinkston?  :D

Yea I'm not a huge fan of the names on the list either, but I'm realistic I know Pitino and Bob Knight aren't coming to coach here.  I would rather have a new guy come in and try to fix this problem then watch norm continue to destroy this program.  Like I have said numerous times Norm is a loser and he will never win here so we need to move on and try something new.  Maybe it won't work but hell it is still a step forward because Norm was just going in reverse.

A Hall of Fame coach recently said this will be a top 5 Big East team next season and a former PG whose banner is hanging at CA has endorsed Norm. They just might know something that us has beens or never was's do posting on message boards? Maybe, maybe not

So you are a Fatcessa disciple now?   Basically regurgitating what he says...

Norm is gone.  Perhaps an NIT title run would save his job...but why does anyone think we can win more than a game or two in the NIT?  Personally, I think they realize how disastrous allowing the NIT to sway them was with Jarvis and that won't happen.  I think he's gone either way and they are just waiting to announce it.  If they "treat him wrong" it might promulgate the thinking that the admin is horrible to workf or, and they won't be able to get a new coach.  That might be why they are trying so hard to support him slash not "decide" anything yet.

Jim Calhoun was a nobody when he took over UConn.  Coach K was a nobody when he took over Duke.  Everyone has to start somewhere.  There are plenty of guys out there who could make their name at St. John's.  I'd agree that a  Paul Hewitt - who has already gottne the best recruits he could get --- prob won't do any different than at GTech - but that's worlds better than Norm.  Hewitt is the "safe choice" - you know prob exactly what you're gonna get with him.  An NCAA tourney every other year on average, NBA talent, middle of the pack BE team that once in a while makes a run.

Pretty much anyone else I've heard as a possibility could benefit from St. John's in various ways and make their name here.  A change needs to be made - no matter what that change is.

I personally don't want a Jim Baron - but I'd take Baron in a heartbeat over Norm if thats my choice.

Kid I dont think St Johns should settle on the "anyone is better than Norm" idea. This school already took a chance on an up and coming asst and it hasnt exactly gone as planned. St Johns cant afford to make that same mistake by settling on a coach that isnt a big name. If they do fire Norm, they absolutly have to bring in a winner, a big name. Anything else would be baby steps

Kid, Baron might be just what you describe.
A guy who needs the big time to make his name.

They may still dance this year.

But aren't baby steps better than no steps?  I dont understand the thought, well letys not make a change unless its a big one.  Why keep Norm around if there are plenty bnetter?

Also Baldi --- no one is a "sure thing."  Norm was NEVER a successful head coach so he was nowhere near a sure thing.  Everyone mentioned as a possibility has been a very successful D1 head coach somewhere, so its not just baby steps....its leaps and bounds better.

Norm's CEILING seems to be NIT bubble.  Anyone who has ever made the NCAA is more than just "baby steps" ahead of Norm.  College bball is cyclical.  Calhoun, Boeheim, and Pitino are on their way out in the next 5-10 years.   We just need somewhere who can get us consistently middle of the pack at the worst now, and hope he can make a jump to the elite, esp. when those old geezers check out.

Maybe you're right.  He just seems like he's had more of a shot than many of the other candidates and has never made a NCAA at URI until MAYBE this year.  A-10 actually gets some at-larges...just dont like him as much as some of the others.  I think Jeff Capel would be a "homerun" up and comer.

What Big East coach wouldn't have good things to say about Norm??? They kick his ass in recruiting and on the court.  If I was calhoun I would say Norm Roberts is a saint.  Calhoun beats him out for every recruit and st. John's is thought of as an easy win versus most BE teams.  Damn wake up Baldi.
