Roberts Might Weather Storm
NIT may provide second chance for St. John's coach Roberts
March 15, 2010 By GREG LOGAN greg.logan@newsday.com

The road to salvation for St. John's coach Norm Roberts, who is fighting to hold on to his job, lies through Memphis and probably Oxford, Miss.

For the first time in his six-season tenure, the Red Storm was invited to a legitimate, traditional postseason tournament when the NIT extended a bid Sunday.

The sixth seed Roberts' team received wasn't too glamorous and meant the Storm must...

The last paragraph in the article is a classic:
"So, for those who were checking their watches to see if time was almost up for Roberts, better spring ahead and reset those watches to St. John's Savings Time".

winning the NIT is good for your program, and def is a positive in what must have been, for most getting a bid, a disappointing year...but in reality, all you are, is a team not good enough for the ncaa tournament, beating other teams who werent good enough for the ncaa tournament...it sounds like im putting down the NIT but am i wrong? i dont see how he can retain his job even with an NIT title...bc even if he wins it this year, what is he selling for next year, JUST an ncaa bid?...and then what?...another 4 years till another bid? or maybe less if recruits somehow are so impressed with them getting in once that they flock to the school? who writes these articles

you're not wrong. the nit is practice for freshman. when juniors and seniors are going it proves that this is best they'll be at this level.

Not in every case, but in our case, it's a waste of time.
