I disagree. I don't think its exclusively a springboard for young teams. Potentially for some schools this could be a big step in their program. I don't think the NIT is a loser's tournament. Again I'll reiterate that its disappointing that St. John's didn't make the NCAA this year and I can understand the frustration with being in the NIT.

The top 1/5 of all college basketball teams in the entire country make the NCAA.  What more do you want? The NIT is an outdated part of history that the NCAA hangs onto to make a little more money - nothing more.

If and when the NCAA idiotically expands the tourney to 96, the NIT will be no more.

It's slightly over a fifth but you're in the ball park. Sure its a money making tournament however it does offer schools more exposure and something to play for. There are good teams in this tournament just as there are good teams in the CBI. I don't see an issue here. It's a good tournament but I know its not thee tournament. Nothing is like the NCAA tournament.

Dave, no offense, but I think you're drinking the kool aid. I'm surprised there's any left.
We were 6-12. What post season tournament do we belong in? We finished 13th. We should be going home.

Calling the NIT a loser's tournament is wrong. This has NOTHING to do with St. John's being in or out of it. Getting an NIT berth this year is disappointing in my opinion but that shouldn't deem the NIT as a loser's tournament for everyone now.

Dave....consolation brackets have been called "Losers tournaments" for years.  This is not a novel expression coined by Poison.  It has always been a "Loser's" tournament.  It's for those who lost too many games to get into the NCAA, yet still aren't absolutely horrible.

You may take offense to the name for whatever reason, but let's call a spade a spade here...

If you love St.John's, you want them to lose tonight. It's for the best.

Can't do it.

A tournament "consolation bracket" is when teams that are in the main draw of a tournament lose and then are put into a "loser's bracket" where they can continue to play against each other.  Sometimes referred to as a "back draw" in a double elimination format.

The NIT is not a "consolation bracket or "losers tournament" of the Ncaa.  It is a second tier tourament of it's own right.

It's the same thing man.  F'ing semantics.  Why can't we admit we're in a loser's tournament?

The NCAA tourney is the only one that matters.  Maybe for a mid-major or a freshmen high major team the NIT can be very exciting and fun.

For those of us who root for high-major programs who actually have a solid history...rooting for the NIT is like rooting for WASJU to be allowed to go to a boys poker night since we know his wife totally shut him down on going to AC.  Sure it's better than nothing, but the prize has already been lost.

I don't think the NIT is a loser's tournament, either.  I'm just not a fan of the CBI, though.  Maybe, there are some rare circumstances that I may understand about being in the CBI.  But, I could care less about it.

Nevertheless, considering the circumstances with St. John's; the coach and their roster....  The NIT sucks for their situation.  We have a team of upperclassmen and they barely got into the NIT (#6 seed out of a major conference).

I would've been happy with this two years ago and okay with it a year ago.  But, I think it sucks considering the points I've made.

How could anyone be a fan of the CBI? Last year, our option to follow the game was to hit refresh on our espn browser. The NIT is televised, but I'm ashamed even admitting it that I'm watching it.

I guess Fairfield and its fans are fans of the CBI. They came back from being down 26 and won in OT. Fairfields coach was just on with Francessa

How can people be down on the NIT?  Going to Memphis will only help the Red Storm in the future!

Anytime you get to put on the St. John's unifrom its a great thing!  For those of you who think the NIT is for losers you have never played the game.

If you are a REAL RED STORM FAN you will support the team tonight!!

Teams that lose in the NCAA don't go to NIT then it would be a losers bracket/tournament. Teams earned this spot in this tournament. We happened to fall short of expectations and wound up in the NIT but that doesn't make it a losers tournament.

Whatever.  I'll call it a "loser's tournament," you can call it the "fall short of expectations tournament" and Carmine can call it a "second tier tournament."  This is subjective and no one is going to win.  We all understand what each other is talking about, no need for us to continue arguing about what each other calls the loser's tournament...I mean NIT.   ;) :)

I enjoyed the first day of the NIT, by the way. Seton Hall imploded (maybe they'll get Seth Greenberg!), U Conn struggled, UNC looked iffy, and a buzzer beater for Jacksonville State over Arizona State?  That was exciting sh*t, man.  Good warm up for the main tourney.

It's not even a "fall short of expectations tournament" I said that we (St. John's) happened to fall short. Other teams that's not the case. I don't see a reason to bash the NIT.

I don't think Stony Brook is calling this a losers tournament getting a chance to play Illinois or William and Mary getting a crack at UNC. That has to be pretty exciting for them.

We can certainly disagree however I just fail to see the need to bash the NIT.

For a major conference school it's a cr@p tournament.

If your a mid major I can see how it's a good tourney for them.

It's like wanting to go to the prom with a hottie and you end up going to the movies with your sister
