Xavier wins because it gets very good players. It gets very good players because at least a decade ago, it decided to hitch its university star to men's basketball. If you want national publicity, there is no better way to fly than above a basketball rim. As XU president Father Michael Graham told me last November for a story that appeared on Sports Illustrated.com, "The money we pay our basketball coaches should be billed to our marketing department."
