Hewitt

Since moving to Tampa I have started playing ball with some big time GT boosters.  Word that they have told me is that Hewitt and GT have started talk of a buyout.  His contract rolled over on the 15th and since they were still alive they had to pick it up.  Nobody is happy with his lack of big time results with huge amounts of talent.  They are also telling me that he is in active negotiations with another program who would pick up some of the buyout

Take it for what it's worth.

Thanks for telling us. This has clearly been been the most excitement we've had since winning the BE tournament in 00.

I would rather have Hewitt than Tubby.

GT ran into a monster in Evan Turner who has a nice surrounding cast. They're a really good team so I don't blame Hewitt at all for thier early exit.

Hewitt would do some damage with all those 'ships next year.  Very excited if he lands here.  Only way i'll be pissed is Pecora.

Matta wasn't the guy coaching a pair of potential lottery picks.
He had the most talented team in the ACC and finished 7-9.

As a recruiter, Hewitt can run toe-to-toe with all but about eight to ten coaches.
As a bench coach, no working head coach would go to his coaching clinic over Smith's.

Of course, he is. Matta had one.
Hewitt had Favors and Lawal.

Put that into perspective though. Favors although insanely talented was also about as raw as any top player coming in from last years class. I think Hewitt groomed him really well because Favors improved by leaps and bounds from the start of the season. Also, Turner is capable of taking a game over (which he did) Favors and Lawal are not. Turner is an absolute beast and OSU will go as far as he'll take them. I like OSU overall better than GT. I had OSU winning in my bracket so I wasn't surprised.

Recruiting is his bright spot but I don't think he's getting enough credit as a coach. I haven't followed him as a coach closely but just by looking at GT and the way Favors improved, I think he's at least solid as a coach.

I'm not sure how much you saw of Favors on the Atlanta Celtics, but he wasn't raw. He was easily the most talented and developed big man in the 2009 class. The only question was whether he was going to go to UGA or GT.

Lawal was a junior and Favors was a freshman.

i would like hewitt as well...just hope he doesnt recruit the same kids as he did at Ga. Tech..granted those kids could play such as Favors whos a lottery pick Lawal, and Shumpert but those kids were dumb as bricks...i watched them about 5 times this year and everytime i saw them they drove me crazy. They commit dumb fouls, cant catch simple chest passes, and take dumb shots. Obviously not going to be same kids but just dont want same type of kids where they arent fully there when it comes to playing the game the right way.

I didn't see any of him before he got to GT but I have watched quite of bit of him this year and have seen how much he's improved. He may have been developed by other recruits standards but he looked raw at first and by the end of the year he was starting to reach his superstar potential. He carried GT down the stetch from what I saw.

I wonder how legit this rumor is compared to the rumor from a couple of days ago from a good source that Greenberg was all set to take the job.  Crazy times.

It seems more plausible.

Greenberg was going to be returning his two best players and his recruiting has finally picked up.

Hewitt was going to be losing his two best players and four of his top six off of a 7-9 ACC team, with only Jason Morris, a very nice kid and a great athlete, but hardly an immediate impact player at this level, signed. Hewitt missed on all but one of his targets this year. This might take Georgia Tech off the hook from firing him after next season.

Mark Bradley (A J-C) and Rick Bozich (L C-J and one who wrote the other day that he predicted that Hewitt would be named STJ coach in a week), who do some of the better college basketball journalism, seem to feel that this is the end of Hewitt era at GT. Bradley covers GT as well as anyone and has been highly critical of the talent that Hewitt has squandered and Hewitt's lack of in-game adjustments.

I'm ok with Hewitt, though he scares me. He's certainly 1,000 times better than Pecora and will do a good job of filling nine ships for us.  Tech people are probably excited at all the money they'll be saving by not having to buy him out next year.

John O'Connor is his guy.
The two are inseparable on the recruiting circuit.
He brought on an absolute lightweight, LaBarrie, to replace Charlton "CY" Young.

Thanks NTSG, so I guess O'Connor will be coming along too? Nice to have an Irishman on the bench!  ;)

favors was not raw at all,and hewitt did nothing to improve his game..this kid is a lottery pick...hewitt gets talent, but there is a huge talent pool to draw from in georgia...the best kids in the country have been coming out of georgia...look at superman in orlando..he is from georgia..I would prefer Tubby he has a much better track record, and will not get the program in trouble..look what he did with minn..he took over an 8 win program, and had three 20 win seasons and two dances...this is a down year in the a.c.c. he should leave the acc because next year he will be a lap dog to unc, duke, vt, and maryland..
