Hewitt Interview Scheduled for Wednesday [NY Post]
« on: March 23, 2010, 05:05:35 PM »
St. John's is expected to interview Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt  tomorrow, The Post has learned.

As reported exclusively in today's Post, Hewitt has emerged as a leading candidate to replace fired coach Norm Roberts. St. John's athletic director Chris Monasch received permission to speak to Hewitt at 11:45 this morning.

A highly placed source said Hewitt sat atop a List Monasch and Father Donald J. Harrington agreed upon before the university president left for a board of trustees meeting in Rome.

Another source told The Post if it is decided Hewitt is the right hire and a deal is reached, St. John's could announce it before Harrington returns. A former Big East coach told The Post that Hewitt will be well-received.

"He'll be great for the players that are there and he'll be great going forward,'' said the source. "Paul is a player's coach. The kids will take to him.''

A Paul Hewitt hire means a few things to me.  (1) We probably don't make the tournament
next year, because he is not exactly known as an x's and o's genius. (2) We'll probably get a transfer or two.

its funny...all these guys who win at mid majors or small time schools, we think are genius's bc they win with nothing...im sure we would have all been excited to see what fran could do with our guys...well hewitt won at siena before with nothing...im sure if we got him right out of siena we would have thought he was a smart coach...but he goes to gt, and gets great recruits and is so inconsistent with them now that we feel like hes stupid...fact is, there arent many really smart coaches in college...as i was saying we all usually assume the mid major coaches winning without real talent are smart but they are winning bc they get players that arent highly recruited (but with the parity in college ball, are still pretty talented) that are willing to listen and work hard, and they have them for 4 years...the smart coaches at the highest levels are just not the norm...there are only a handful and when schools get them they try like hell to keep them, and make it near impossible to steal them away, as we have been seeing...hewitt is a perfect candidate in terms of the type of guy for the job, like norm was...then, moving on, hes a great recruiter...but hes just a normal coach...maybe one day we'll get one of those impossible to get guys but hewitt is pretty legit, and a sure step up, and boost to this program 10 times over...maybe we dont get into the ncaas next year but we got a much better shot now...and maybe he gets a few late recruits this year, who knows...with hewitt we arent getting the stellar recruiter + game coach everyone wants, but there are only a handful of those that exist anyway...so if we get him, cool...we only have disappointed ourselves indulging all the rumors of the past few days

Isn't that a tad premature?

Maybe we can get the deal done before Lamb signs somewhere...one can dream.

Add Lamb to the current squad and we are an NCAA team for sure.

Is Lamb a pg? After a nw coach, we need a scorer more than anything.
That's why we're bringing in Hewitt. For recruiting.

It seems like his hiring is imminent.

I wouldn't count us out of the tournament just yet. If Hewitt truely is a great recruiter, he could build us a tournament team. It's unlikely but I have hope.

Come on marillac.  Paul Hewitt is a good coach - he did his thing at siena before tech.  I will bet you whatever you want we make NCAA next year if hewitt is coach.

I wouldn't go that far, Marillac.  I think we'll be fine next season, as Hewitt might be able to bring in a solid player or two.

Not to mention, we do not know the assistants he's gonna bring in.....  That is key.

I see one of his current assistants is from Jamaica, Queens.
