Sounds good.  Welcome aboard Mr. Hewitt!
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

What is a safe hire though?

Hewitt is going to bring us VERY talented players and we will be back in the NCAAs.  That's a start.

Whether he can take us to the next level that he could not with Georgia Tech - a consistent NCAA team and more frequent runs to the sweet 16 and beyond is yet to be seen, but if he can make 5 NCAAs, 1 final four in the next year and send 9 kids to the NBA, St. John's will be back on the map in a big way and I will be very happy.  We haven't had a decade anywhere near that sicne the 80s.  Some people expect bc we're NYC we should be amazing immediately.  If he duplciates his career at GTech here, we will be back.  Not sure why everyone's so worried.

There have been some Tech fans on every article saying "take him please" and things of that nature.

Lets not get scared because of that.  The ones who hate their coach dominate message boards and things like that.  They will get a wake up call once they hire a mid major coach that cant bring in the talent Hewitt has.  Hewitt can progress even further here in New York.

i look at his records and standings in a weaker conference with much better talent than we've ever had, and im worried...if we were upset with what norm did with our 3 star recruits, then how are we gonna be with hewitt if he cant post a winning record in this league with his 4-5 star recruits and lottery picks

i hope a change of scenery does it for him too, but the fact remains, if theres any speculation as to if he will have success then its not a safe hire...to go to the extreme, a safe hire is donovan...in other words, u hire him and u know ur fine...u know ull get recruits, u know ull win...with hewitt u hope he really has these great ny ties and his recruiting will transfer to our small little operation in queens, and u really really hope he can coach a winner more consistently...we arent investing 2 mill or so to see this guy go 9-9 in the big east every year...we're not doing it thinking he'll go 16-2 but u get my point

Rome wasn't built in a day.  This is a step in the right direction and is a better choice than any of the others that are on the board.  Let's face it, we are not a very attractive job anymore and I am glad this guy wants to  be here.  Let's see what we can do in the near future with Hewitt and maybe we strike gold here and we can get to the final 4 soon.  Anything is better than what we had before, and I firmly believe this guy can bring us back to relevance.

If this is a done deal, I would like to see who he puts on his staff. I hoping for at least one good X and O's guy.

Let's wait for this to actually happen before we start criticizing him for having losing BE records.

I agree 100% with tha kid. If one month ago every single one of you was asked if consistently getting top recruits and making the NCAAs 5 out of 10 years with a run to the final four was good enough (for now anyway), who here would've said thats not good enough? I know I may sound a bit hypocritical, because I guess it's not right for me to start talking about top recruits and final four runs until he does that either, but if we're gonna base his future on his track record, I'm perfectly ok with a tourny appearance every other year while landing top recruits. And me personally, I think he can have more success here than he did at tech.

i think he'll bring us back to relevance too...bc of his recruiting...and if everyone else turned us down its not a bad hire, its a good hire, but i think the school might have overstate the importance of a guy with ny roots again, and skipped over some people...if he signs soon we know they did bc the ncaa tourny and NIT is still going

This is Hewitt

2000–2001   Georgia Tech   17-13   8-8   T-5th   NCAA 1st Round
2001–2002   Georgia Tech   15-16   7-9   T-5th
2002–2003   Georgia Tech   16-15   7-9   5th   NIT 3rd Round
2003–2004   Georgia Tech   28-10   9-7   T-3rd   NCAA Runner-Up
2004–2005   Georgia Tech   20-12   8-8   T-4th   NCAA 2nd Round
2005–2006   Georgia Tech   11-17   4-12   T-10th
2006–2007   Georgia Tech   20-12   8-8   T-6th   NCAA 1st Round
2007–2008   Georgia Tech   15-17   7-9   T-7th
2008–2009   Georgia Tech   11-17   2-14   12th
2009–2010   Georgia Tech   20-12   7-9   7th   NCAA 2nd Round

For the exception of that one bolded year he isn't that much better than Norm in a weaker conference and with a more talented roster. To me thats scary!

To me its just a lot of money to toss around to make it appear this program is heading in a better direction. The tournament isn't even over yet how many other people have we really looked into if in fact we didn't know that we were letting go of Norm Roberts just a week or 2 ago? How do we know this is the best choice?
