Dave he made 6 postseason tournaments in 10 years. Norm made 1 postseason tournament in 6 years. If you're just looking at conference records, then yea he hasn't had much more success than norm. But how can you compare 6\10 and 1\6 and say he isn't that much better than Norm?

I'm going to start deleting posts that criticize Hewitt but don't bring up better alternatives(JOKING!).

I think its a very good hire.  College basketball is at least 80% about recruiting and I think he will get it done here(hopefully a top level PG ASAP).  Its more important to be a good defensive coach (than offensive) (and I think he's a decent defensive coach) and to get effort from your players on a consistent basis (which I think he will do).

I am very happy with this hire.

For the exception of that one bolded year he isn't that much better than Norm in a weaker conference and with a more talented roster. To me thats scary!

Isnt that much better than Norm are you serious, Norm lead us to one NIT and thats it. Norm recruited MAAC players and when did get good players they didnt improve. Hewitt has lead his teams to NCAAs and has recruited NBA talent and developed it. You guys are being too hard on him, at worst he will bring us to NCAAs every other year and recruit big name players, this a good move

1997–1998    Siena    17-12    10-8    T-3rd
1998–1999    Siena    25-6     13-5    T-1st    NCAA 1st Round
1999–2000    Siena    24-9     15-3    1st            NIT 2nd Round

Don't discount these stats from Hewitt either.

monasch said we were looking for a guy whos a proven winner at the highest level and hewitt posted ONE winning record in conference in 11 years...but hewitt hides that under the rug with an ncaa tourny bid every two years and beating up on people non conference to get 20 wins

I have mixed emotions on Hewitt. I fear for St. John's future.

Dave you were leaning in what direction with Billy and Seth out of the race?

Once I heard Hewitt was Jamaican that was huge positive for me, if you look at the city kids now a lot of them have a Caribbean background & I say most definitely we should add an Hispanic  assistant and we could lock this city down for the future.
Attack basketball, pressure defense, 40 minutes of hell ... Early on it might be 30 minutes of hell, then 10 minutes of what the hell are you doing?"

To me its just a lot of money to toss around to make it appear this program is heading in a better direction. The tournament isn't even over yet how many other people have we really looked into if in fact we didn't know that we were letting go of Norm Roberts just a week or 2 ago? How do we know this is the best choice?

That "exception" is farther than our program has gone in 60 years.  Who is a better choice?

And an AD's job is to have a replacement ready even if he thinks the coach won't be leaving.

Hewitt is an underachiever on a higher scale. I understand the lure of being the recruiter that he is however he's not winning with them. I'd much rather see Fran McCaffrey as our coach than Paul Hewitt. It would be a more financially stable move in addition to bringing in a guy who knows how to build programs.

well, lets see what he does with norms guys next year then...granted he'll have only a summer to get to know them, but i would say thats gonna be the best judge of how much of an improvement we got over norm

And getting further than we have ever gotten in the NCAA tournament in our programs history.

ACC is not a weaker conference.  12 teams, some of those years only 10 teams, and 6-7 make the NCAA each year.  We have 16 teams never get more than half in.  Anyone who claims ACC is "weaker" as a whole other than this year - sure - is just way too northeast centric.

5 NCAAs in 10 years.  When's the last time St. John's had that?

Isn;t much better than Norm?  5 NCAAs in 10 years vs. 0 in 6.

We are NOT a top notch program in anyone's eyes except our own.  Hewitt will make us MORE than relevant again.

This is kind of funny I'm being the pessimist here and everyone else is filled with optimism. I agree he's an upgrade but he wasn't my #1 choice. Maybe 6 years ago he would have been.

Why do you have such confidence in McCaffrey or any other mid major coach for that matter?  Hewitt was McCaffrey before McCaffrey was.

Do you want Stan heath or keno davis as our coach?  Howabout the Iowa coach who was just canned?  Plenty of uber successful mid major coaches don't pan out.

You confident in McCaffrey's recruiting?

Hewitt has done it at mid-major level and he has done it in the ACC and he has recruited very well, AND he has NYC ties.

You don't have many safer options who'd be willing to come to st. john's than that.

Oh come on. Everyone here knows his shortcomings as a coach is his X's and O's and he's been successful because of his recruiting ability. How can you say we'll know what we're gonna get with him based on what he does with the team next year? We're gonna have 9 schollies open, THAT'S gonna be the best judge of how much of an improvement we got over Norm.

im really not arguing about him getting us back to prominence, im just stating hes not a safe hire, which he isnt...he didnt win in the acc, how is he guaranteed to win in the big east?...hes not = hes not a safe hire, which is what we were going for...thats all im saying

5 NCAAs in 10 years at GT.  I'd say that's a track record.  Do you think he isn't a sure thing to make the NCAA a few times here?

we already know hes a better recruiter...what we dont know is how much better of a coach he is...norm didnt have anywhere near his talent last year and we didnt do that much worse record wise in the big east than he did in the acc...so the real judge is how hewitt does with norms kids next year...and the only thing u can say to call bs on that is that norm had years to build relationships with those kids and get to know them and hewitt will only have till next November

well he hasnt won in acc in 10 of his years there...ask seton hall and usf about getting into the tourny without a winning record in the big east

GTech is a tournament team.  They won first round. Don't compare them to Seton Hall or USF.  For all we know they would have went 10-6 in the BE this year.
