Recruiting or Coaching?

There are two roads you can go? Do you go with the x/o man who will get the most out of his men but might not land the biggest fish or go with the Pete Carroll philosophy of getting the best players will win you more games.

A mix of the two would be the best. I lean towards a guy who can recruit and needs little XO's help from an assistant. We need a big name that draws kids here. A coach can always hire a good XO's assistant but its the head coach that draws the kids to the school.

coaching...we win, we get recruits...the coach is a likeable guy and does things the right way, and he will have a good relationship with the local hs coaches and aau guys

relax its going to be ok. Saying winning will attract kids is all well and good but how are we going to start winning without players. As SJU is now top players dont want to come here so if we hire a good X/O mid major coach how is he going to win with inferior players.

If you can win and hire a recruiter, why can't the HC make a name for himself with the kids in the city?

The problem is, the school needs to make a splash with the 2011 recruiting class.

relax? lol, im not gonna bash that post but think over what u say...norm wouldnt hire someone to help him coach the team...a head coach is a head coach, these guys dont hire help, they, and only they, call the shots...to say that a big name coach, a proven guy would for some reason hire someone to help him run the team and make decisions in game, is stupid...and for winning...we got 9 seniors next year...while they arent lottery picks, they are ncaa tournament talent...they can make it with a good coach

recruiting is the name of the game.

There's a reason Roy Will, Coach K and the rest of these big time coaches grovel at the feet of these kids and chase them around the country.

I think names are really important now and kids want to play for big name recruiters. I hope what you say is right that we can hire a good coach and that he will attract recruits. I think Greenberg is the one coach left on our list who can caoch and at the same time recruit solid players. I believe if we miss out on hom we are in some trouble.

that, i will agree with u on...greenberg is the only one who can do a little of both...he does neither at a very high level but he does both to some degree...the guy already told parents and players hes coming back though, if he leaves now he is gonna have alot of people pissed at him

Again I am not convinced that anyone outside of Pitino, Donovan, Cal type would be able to recruit consistently here. Go hire Donahue!

Why do you think George Blaney sits next to Calhoun and Ralph Willard sits next Pitino...

Its the GREAT coach that surrounds himself people that are as good as he is...

rrrrrrrrrrrrright...so its not that the great coaches teach their assistants THEIR way of playing the game, and thats why the assistants become great themselves...ok

and u want them sitting right next to u, bc they are ur clone...u taught them, theyre ur student, they know what u know, what u taught them...they make sure stuff doesnt fall through the cracks, offer a different perspective, or relay the orders u give to everyone else

You do know who George Blaney is...right?

i dont get it? ur saying blaney is a teacher and mentor to calhoun just bc he had a long coaching career?  him coming back into coaching at all probably represents only the close relationship him and calhoun have...i doubt very much blaney is the mastermind behind the team and calhoun is just a figurehead
