I still think Lavin and staff should have made it that first act to keep this kid on board, especially since the Remi Barry disaster. Roberts and Polee would have been nice together

Really, Marco?  Because I don't hear anyone else talking up this Roberts kid.  Not even on A-10 previews.  Remi wasn't a disaster; he wasn't counted on to carry the team.

Did Ron Roberts choose St.Joe's over Michigan State and Duke? No.

We also heard rumors about Ron Roberts decommitting way before Lavin was hired (I know PMG said it when we still had Norm).

Going after Remi was a risk, but one that was well worth it as we had nothing to lose but something tremendous to gain.

i saw this thread in little window next to the main forum and called the creator of it lol...and remi wasnt a disaster...kid didnt qualify for everyone, not just us...if not for the ncaa clearinghouse's bs lavin would have gotten a nba caliber talent in his first offseason without ever having coached a min for this school...its only a disaster if u hold lavin in the most high regard

I'm not sure who writes the reviews that you were referencing, but Roberts was a major pickup for SJU. The only possible reasoning that I could see would be that he was a late bloomer, but it isn't often that an A-10 school beats out a pair of ACC schools for a recruit. I really like Roscoe Smith (UCon, yet Roberts really held his own (22 points) against him in a miraculous win for St. Peter's over vaunted Oak Hill earlier this year.

I was a big fan of this kid and still am. I think he is going to end up up being ag reat player in college.

Also, while I think it was a miss for St. John's, this kid was looking to leave the day Norm Roberts was let go. Ron's & coach thought they should have been priority #1 for Lavin from the day he got hired and that is a ridiculous thought. Their feelings got hurt a little bit, they didn't like it and they went in another direction. Good luck to them but Lavin obviously didn't think as highly of this kid as some of us, especially me. I trust his judgement.

It's stil early for previews, but I'm thinking of the recruiting sites (Rivals, Scout), Maxpreps, ESPN, which has its A-10 preview out, Rush the Court... not to say he won't blow people's minds when he plays, but I'm almost surprised to not hear much about a prospect from Jersey.  Especially one who was available late.

He would have been nice, but if the kid had a strong affinity for Roberts - as other recruits seemed to - and wanted to go, good luck to him.

Side question - you think Roscoe Smith can carry U Conn, scoring-wise? (Because someone has to take up the scoring slack on that team.)

What a shock...Baldi stirring up trouble.  This is so old I am tempted to not even read Baldi-started threads anymore.  Just likes to go against the grain.

Isn't he very similar to Polee just not as good? He supposed to be a great athlete just not a freak like Polee? If that is the case we didn't lose much  by him not coming here. But I am ready for a player to commit. A five star player would be great, but I would be thrilled if we got a 3 star player. We have got 9 scholarships to fill and I am getting a little nervous.

Meeting and liking Lavin is half the battle. Now we need to show everyone that SJU is back on the map-and it starts with winning.

Kids want to play for a winner. I have zero inside info, but I'm betting that a lot of families that like what they've seen so far and they are waiting to see how the positive vibe translates to the court.

Lavin has an endless amount of seniors, and a lot of BE lost a lot. We didn't. Once he shows what he can do with these seniors, kids will come running. It has still been 7 years since he's coached.

How is this stirring the pot? Fact is recruits that are supposedly comsidering us are still getting picked off day by day to other schools. Next year we have what? 3 returning players? A returning frontcourt of Polee and Roberts would have been nice.

Roscoe is physically capable of stepping in and offsetting some of their scoring loss and defensive versatility that Robinson brought, but mentally he needs to concentrate and maintain his motivation (if you tell him before a game to lock down Player X or that others think highly of Player X, he's got a poor version of what Artest used to have in high school- in that he can be a little overboard in his competitiveness. If it's channeled, a coach could make great use of it.). One former Rivals scout felt that Roscoe was a bit of a bully in that if you punch him back or aren't intimidated by him, you can take him out of his game and that his dad was simply hiding him from getting exposed in AAU basketball, which he only played later in very limited settings during his senior season. He's a skilled, athletic 6'8" wing, who is an excellent rebounder and shot blocker for his position and has an above-average mid-range game. He's worked on his handle and perimeter shot, but they can still be improved.

A lot of coaches and moreso their assistants were pitching him on coming in and being the man for a year or two, but he was right in looking for a head coach that would make him work or, as he put it, kick his ass. His dad was from the streets and Roscoe is definitely proud to be from Baltimore, but his dad was very protective that Roscoe didn't wind up blowing his potential on a corner. He averaged almost a triple-double at Walbrook as a junior and was a rare sophomore that made all-city in Baltimore. There was definitely, well, an adjustment period at Oak Hill. He liked Lamb, but it never completely clicked.

Even though he's at rival UConn, for his sake, I hope it works out for him.
