Really, Marco? Because I don't hear anyone else talking up this Roberts kid. Not even on A-10 previews. Remi wasn't a disaster; he wasn't counted on to carry the team.
I'm not sure who writes the reviews that you were referencing, but Roberts was a major pickup for SJU. The only possible reasoning that I could see would be that he was a late bloomer, but it isn't often that an A-10 school beats out a pair of ACC schools for a recruit. I really like Roscoe Smith (UCon, yet Roberts really held his own (22 points) against him in a miraculous win for St. Peter's over vaunted Oak Hill earlier this year.
It's stil early for previews, but I'm thinking of the recruiting sites (Rivals, Scout), Maxpreps, ESPN, which has its A-10 preview out, Rush the Court... not to say he won't blow people's minds when he plays, but I'm almost surprised to not hear much about a prospect from Jersey. Especially one who was available late.
He would have been nice, but if the kid had a strong affinity for Roberts - as other recruits seemed to - and wanted to go, good luck to him.
Side question - you think Roscoe Smith can carry U Conn, scoring-wise? (Because someone has to take up the scoring slack on that team.)
Roscoe is physically capable of stepping in and offsetting some of their scoring loss and defensive versatility that Robinson brought, but mentally he needs to concentrate and maintain his motivation (if you tell him before a game to lock down Player X or that others think highly of Player X, he's got a poor version of what Artest used to have in high school- in that he can be a little overboard in his competitiveness. If it's channeled, a coach could make great use of it.). One former Rivals scout felt that Roscoe was a bit of a bully in that if you punch him back or aren't intimidated by him, you can take him out of his game and that his dad was simply hiding him from getting exposed in AAU basketball, which he only played later in very limited settings during his senior season. He's a skilled, athletic 6'8" wing, who is an excellent rebounder and shot blocker for his position and has an above-average mid-range game. He's worked on his handle and perimeter shot, but they can still be improved.
A lot of coaches and moreso their assistants were pitching him on coming in and being the man for a year or two, but he was right in looking for a head coach that would make him work or, as he put it, kick his ass. His dad was from the streets and Roscoe is definitely proud to be from Baltimore, but his dad was very protective that Roscoe didn't wind up blowing his potential on a corner. He averaged almost a triple-double at Walbrook as a junior and was a rare sophomore that made all-city in Baltimore. There was definitely, well, an adjustment period at Oak Hill. He liked Lamb, but it never completely clicked.
Even though he's at rival UConn, for his sake, I hope it works out for him.
