Looking at all these recruits and their rankings it got me thinking what type of recruit do I really want.  Figured I'd bring it to the board also to see what the prevailing thought was here.  Would you rather a top ranked kid who is likely to leave after year 1 or another type of player who is likely to be around for all 4 years and be a strong contributor all 4 years?

I think I personally would try to find an in between and hope the kids improves every year to become a stud his junior/senior year but that's more rare then the other situations.  It appears many of these kids go to college with these thoughts that they'll automatically become pros and that it's only a matter of time.  I know my freshman year at St. John's I lived with 2 basketball players and both told me that they were going to be leaving school early for the NBA.  One said he'd leave after that year and the other said he'd play two years tops.  None the less both had to transfer to lower level schools after their sophomore years and never were heard of again.  This attitude appears to lead to a lot of transfers and possible headaches for the coach.

Well I guess you weren't roomies with Cedric Jackson as he actually did make it!

More specifically - if a top ranked guy, I don't want the "raw athletic freak type" - like John Henson or LSU's Anthony Randolph.  There are one/two-and-dones that can carry your team, and then there are guys who are 6'11, can handle like a guard, but don't understand what a good shot is, or how to not turnover the ball.  That's just frustrating. 

The 2 and 3-and done level talents are my ideal.

My ideal recruit is a guy who is a game changer, can immediately raise us to the next level, yet isn't looking for the first chance to jump to the nba - wants to be a top 3 pick and if he's just lottery after frosh yr, he comes back for year 2.  He's a guy who makes everyone better but is willing to put the team on his back.

  That would be great.  Unfortunately 95% of guys, if a lottery pick after Frosh year are going to go pro.   I agree with everything you said.  We need to recruit an elite level PG.  Most important position on the court in college hoops.

Lavor Postell, and currently I'd like to add DJ Kennedy to the list of the kind of player we should be going after.

Kids who work hard to improve. Kids who aren't spooked by big name opponents, and kids who can bring that NY swaggar.

As we all know, a lot of athletes aren't from NY-and yet that they have that NY swagger. To me, it's a kid ready for NY.

Every program wants a Carmelo Anthony,
But I don't think you're going to get one until you make it clear that star player is walking onto a court with 4 DJ Kennedys.

Kid, not that I disagree because that would be amazing but is it even probable?  I was trying to think of a recent player who did that and came up blank.  Maybe Greg Monroe but on the other hand I don't think he ever had an interest of putting the team on his back.  So many of these guys are getting told by outsiders how great they are and how high they'll be drafted they just want out as fast as they can.

Ideal recruit? Chris Mullin. Local kid, high basketball IQ,shoot the lights out and played 4 years of college ball at a high level

In this class, Quinn Cook.

Quinn is likely a quality four-year college player, who can shoot, has great court vision and passing ability, is a great teammate and demonstrates great sportsmanship with his opponent, not turnover prone, but doesn't have the ideal height or world-class lateral quickness that NBA scouts will be drooling over. Quinn was the first junior to win the POY in the WCAC, which was the best hs league in the county, in 46 years. He just led the United States U-17 to gold in Germany, while leading the team in assists. He's also arguably the most popular kid in the 2011 class, which would help pay dividends in a potentially large recruiting class such as St. John's, and is friendly with several pros like Chris Paul, fellow DCA alumnus Beasley, Wall, and Cousins as well as entertainers like Wale.

Other programs may need other pieces, but St. John's needs Quinn.

The example is someone like ben gordon, emeka okafor, jay williams, carlos boozer, kyle singler, terrence morris (despite the fact he should have left earlier ha ha), yes greg monroe, sherron collins, cole aldrich, adam morrison, guys that could have left to the nba at least one year earlier than they did. Maybe bc they were just end of the first picks, maybe bc they were striving for top 3, maybe bc they just like college - whatever. Those are the ideal recruits, in my mind, regardless of how they did in the nba. Guys like that staying on a year after being first round worthy make you immensely better and help recruiting a ton, IMO.

Kid, that is our ideal recruit, but we have not had a recruit like that since Malik Sealy.

Most of the guys you listed stayed in school because they could afford to financially. We just don't get those kids.

Not all, but a lot of players we've had at SJU have not had the luxury of turning down a 7 figure salary. Ron Artest might have stayed in college if he had Shane Battier's parents raising and providing for him.

  Nice Kid.  I like that list.  10 1st team All- Americans.  Certainly the ideal. I think Lavin will do just fine.  Only Baldi appears to be getting worried.
