Redshirts?
« on: September 12, 2010, 04:50:17 PM »
With our top-heavy senior class, is there any possibility that the coaching staff decides to redshirts a player or two?

The pros are that it helps balance out the classes and it gives the staff the opportunity to develop guys who may not have yet reached their potential under the previous staff's tutelage.  The con is that it wastes schollies that could be used to bring in quality recruits in 2011.

It may not be fair to speculate as to who should redshirts, but we have a logjam at the two guard and we have two Justins who can't be on the court at the same time.  Burrell's NBA stock may be enhanced greatly if he has another year with this coaching staff.

I just don't see anyone getting redshirted this year. I cant really pick out anyone who we can afford to redshirt. Burrell and Brownlee are going to play big roles on the team this year I think we need them both. I think Evans and Coker could probably benefit most from another year because theres games are not very refined but I don't see either sitting out this year when this is the year they have been working for. These guys have played hard together and want to make a run this year I just can't see Lavin choosing to redshirt any of our seniors.

No way Burrell gets redshirted.  This is Lavins program. Burrell is Norms guy.  Not that Lavin will push him out, but,  he's a senior.   Only player i could see, MAYBE, is Horne.  He's a junior and would have another 2 years.  Plus Hardy will get the minutes this year anyhow.

Burrell is the second to last guy on this team that would get redshirted, with dj being the last.

Coker is the only one I'd even consider - I feel like evans would have issues with a redshirt - just play him 10-15 mins.  No one will or should be redshirted.

It would be cool if Coker could/ would redshirt; he's shows flashes of skill but won't get time.  remember him hitting 4 jump shots at Marquette?  He can block shots, needs to work on his hands when he rebounds... and he's 6'10".  Would love to see him with a young team, displaying what a big man can do on St. John's - for future big men.

I soo so much untapped potential in Burrell.  I really wish this coaching staff had more time to work with him.  Let's hope he puts it all together on the court this year.

No offense to the kids but in the nicest way possible I want them gone and Lavin to be able to make his mark on the program as soon as possible.  If they were JR's I would be open to it but since they are all Sr's let them enjoy 1 yr under a great coach and staff and hope they can make a future playing ball somewhere.  Then let Lav bring in 'his' guys.

This was without a doubt I'm sure a great advantage we had in getting Lavin.  It didn't require him years to clean house of the prior staff's players.

I find this Coker redshirting talk insane.  We need Coker THIS year.  We don't have anyone over 6'8 besides him.  He'll also fit into our running style because we can press and leave him back as safety.  What good does having Coker do for our team next year?  It would take a miracle for such a young squad to even come close to the tournament.  If we win this year we can attract the top talent and get back on the map immediately.

Also, I want this entire roster to turn over as soon as possible.  I want all of Lavin's guys in here.  Coker can be replaced and then some easily by a JUCO.

We need all of our bigs.  The one guy that I could see redshirting from a talent perspective would be Q--but even he won't be redshirted.  We also need Stith to provide depth at the point.

It looks like they have leper.

I want them learning, enjoying and winning, three things that they haven´t done much in the past.

And they will enjoy all 3 this year.

Also red-shirting is a two way street.  A kid is a lot less likely to do it after already completing 3 years of college than towards the beginning.

23 is still 2 years older then he should be. My birthday is in Septmber when I started my senior year at SJU I was only 20. I love Paris and I am not trying to make a big deal of this but it is crazy how many players on all teams are old. Just a pet peev of mine. I coach Middle school baskeball and we lose more games then we win for the sole reason that the teams we play have older players. I would love to go on and rant, but it seems like I already took a shot at one of my favorite players. In middle school having 15/16 year olds is big advantage, in HS having 18/19 year olds is a a big advantage, in college having 23 year olds MEN is a huge advantage.

We need everyone on this roster next year.  All of our front court players give us something different:  Burrell can knock down the 10-15 footer well and is good for a highlight take the tin or three, JB2 is so adept in the running game, blocking shots off the ball, and working the baseline on offense, Evans is rough and tumble with great hustle.  Even Rob Thomas is an automatic four quick points and a handful of boards with his back-to-the-basket game.

DJ is the heart and soul.  Paris is not far behind and we need his outside shot and defense.  Hardy will be the x-factor IMO and we will go as both him and Boothe go.

Stith and Boothe are the only two PG's we have.  Q is somewhat expendable this year, but he already redshirted last year.  Polee will be a good energy guy to get the crowd going, and if we go a few minutes without a bucket, draw up an alley-oop to him.

We really need everyone.  You don't redshirt your only legit big man to add a win or two to what will probably be a 14-15 win team in 2011-2012.
