St. John's Tip-Off to Air on ESPNU
« on: October 04, 2010, 07:42:55 PM »
ADMISSION IS FREE BUT SPACE IS LIMITED. This year’s Red Storm Tip-Off is open to the public, with free tickets available for pickup beginning at 2 p.m. on Oct. 15 at the Carnesecca Arena Ticket Office. Free pizza will be available for the first 2,000 students through the doors at 7 p.m., and attendance at the event earns St. John’s students +3 MVP points.

ESPN SportsCenter anchor John Anderson will serve as the event’s host while New York City’s own D.J. S&S – the D.J. of music and entertainment mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs – will get the crowd moving during a night where the 2010-11 men’s and women’s basketball teams will be introduced, and Lavin and Barnes Arico will address fans about the excitement of the upcoming season. Both teams will hold short scrimmages and the men’s team will put on a dunk contest as part of what is sure to be an outstanding evening of contests, giveaways, performances and surprises on St. John’s Queens Campus. At the end of the night, one fan will have the opportunity to take home $10,000 by making a half-court shot.

Good times keep rolling!  Lavin is the man.  Props to the athletic department for putting this together.  I hope we have some big time recruits in the building and hopefully we get some commitments.

St. John's athletic department is doing big things this year. I really think this is going to be huge. Can't wait. I told you a while back that I wouldn't be surprised if ESPN covered it. Some more things you can be surprised with Ron Browz may be performing, P. Diddy making an appearance, and the Rucker Park legend Booooooooby Smooooooooth being emcee for dunk contest. There might be a few more musical guests that may pop up too.

I saw Steve Lavin painted on the back of a Coca Cola truck today with some advertisement saying the Red are thirsty or something to that affect

A popular rapper or performer showing up would be HUGE.  It would get students out and excited.  I hope word about this spreads around campus . I don't care if people are getting excited for Midnight Madness for reasons OTHER than basketball.  The goal at this point is getting them to attend and then in turn, hopefully those that might not have come to see any games may come out for a few.  Jay Wright surprised the Villanova crowd a few years back at Midnight Madness by getting 50 Cent to perform, so getting someone like P. Diddy here would be huge.  As Dave said, there are BIG things happening here.  This is no longer amateur hour.

The release doesn't say that.  The release say that P Diddy's DJ will be there working the event.

But I don't want to put words in Dave's mouth but I think he's mentioning he might be there.  Again its not being officially mentioned.

At this point it's just a rumor but he could make an appearance. It would be awesome if he does. I'll have a cheesecake waiting for him

Which 2012 and 13 kids, if any (yet), have publicly said they're attending?
I'm sure they're going to try to have kids from multiple classes there.

The Juice crew can stay home.  But Big Daddy Kane would be FRESH! And Funky FLY!

You could do a whole old school show. EPMD will reunite for money (I've seen them twice in the past 6 years..)

NTSG - haven't heard much about the players attending.  That's for the Rivals people and Zagoria to suss out.

This needs to be packed with students, and not the fair-weather asses that have plagued this program for over a decade.

I wonder if the athletic department could put together a task force of Halloween -esque egg throwers to intimidate the casual soul-less student into going to midnight madness.

I'm not opposed to brute force as well.
Whatever it takes. This basketball program is the most important part of the university.
The school can't risk all of the work the athletic dept has done up to now.

On National tv we must look like we care about the program.

I think the school is doing a great job in putting this together. I would urge them to however announce in advance whatever musical talent they have or at least throw out multiple big names out ensure people will show.

Most of these musical acts are flaky to say the least.  I'm sure they want 120% assurances they are in fact coming.

I'm really excited for this event.  I hope everyone that lives in the area makes it out to the arena.  We need this to be huge!  I think there will be some top talent there.
