looking at JUCO rebound leaders the 1st few games this year:
Most are 6'4 or 6'5 "forwards- but 1 stood out a little.

Averon Matthews 7' sophmore @ Broward CC in Fla. originally from Brooklyn
there was a thread 3 years ago on redmen.com
http://www.redmen.com/index.php?option=com_jfusion&Itemid=107&jfile=showthread.php&t=31990

We were mentioned with him 3.5 years ago when he was 6'10' senior.  Through 3 games
 @ Broward he's averaging 12 rebounds, 24pts and taken 47 freethrows (making 64%)

Saw him play in HS. He was not impressive at all. He was tall and one of the better players on the court but he did not dominate the game. I knew his coach and he was telling me that SJU was looking at him. Didn't really believe it because he wasn't that good. I am not a scout but what I can remember is that he was a good player on a bad team playing in a weak league.

All 6 of our recruits are great players.
Why would we add a project?

Steve....I love that you're digging for names.  Like you said though it's been 3.5 years since we've been mentioned with him.
When you're a kid from New York and you do it in New York, that lasts forever!

Because you need role players. (By the way I'm not advocating this recruit)

The top programs in the conference get top 100 talent and these kids sit on the bench until it's their turn.

No projects on Syracuse or Nova.

I think most would agree we now need most a JUCO PF/C
On his thread on Redmen.com, Moose saw Gods Gift last weekend
& did a good write up on him. He sounds like a "project" too.

http://www.redmen.com/account/showthread.php?t=43316

I know nothing of the kid & was not pushing for him.
Was just looking to see what was available in the JUCO ranks.

I agree- no projects (early signing) any more. If the kid is not BE starter material, pass.
Except that we need 1 or 2 more bigs & at the moment
we have only 1 "project" that we're even connected to

We're not either program - we have 6 or more years to go before we can do what they do, which is bring in top-100 talent who will wait their turn or develop into role players despite their desires to be the man.

The strength of cc in Florida is in the Panhandle conference in NW Florida not in S Florida. Don't know if he'll play against NWFlorida St, Pensacola, Tallahassee or Chippola this year (these 4 teams generally play a national schedule, have 2 or 3 in top 10 cc rankings and may play his team). If he does we'll have a better idea of his talent since the aforementioned schools generally have several Div 1 prospects on their rosters.

Peter, we have at least 2 top 100 guys for 12-13 who who'll be coming off the bench.

That doesn't sound so far away.

Only can move down, moving up requires sitting out a year
