Well Lavin said the lineup shake up was for disciplinary reasons (due to class attendance) and to reward those who were playing well.

- Free throws, free throws, free throws...jesus this team sucks at them right now.

- game shouldn't have been this close, but it's a win and I'll take it.

- Very happy to see DJ take his frustrations of not being in the startling lineup (which he said was the right move for coach to do) and drop 20 tonight, hopefully we see that more and more all year.

- Brownlee is simply amazing, coming off the bench and he still dominated. If he doesn't win multiple Big East honors this year I'll be shocked.

Just to clear something up, only Brownlee was benched for poor class attendance.  DJ was benched due to poor demeanor on the court in the Arizona State game and Polee was benched due to inefficiency in practice.

Thanks for the clarification. Even if most of these guys won't be here next year, I'm glad this staff is nipping bad habits in the bud-as they build this program.

Wagner substantially out rebounded SJU (40 to 33).  Wagner.  This won't fly in the BE. A win is a win but this is not an encouraging one.
I couldn't watch this game, but the rebounding margin, in and of itself, is alarming, particularly to an NEC team.

I'm not gonna lie, Hurley although he was the biggest whiner I've ver seen had that team well coached, especially for a group with 3 freshman in the starting 5.  Ugly 2nd half but whatever we have to get better and lay it on the Bonnies Tuesday.

I'm curious how Coach Hurley will do at the low-major level and how he'll try to sell Wagner. He ran a tight ship over at St. B's, but inherited a five-win team.

Free throws killed us tonight. Shot 17/30. Also 17% from 3 point range. Besides that I thought we played well.

this whole "benching" thing is and will be blown out of proportion. Lavin tried to make light of it in the presser but people kept trying to make it into a story. He said it was a very minor ordeal and obviously everyone learned their lessons.

It was a win...the kids learned a little bit.  They were clearly tired and unenergized as should be expected after winning a big tournament against a big-time program 3,500 miles away.

I like the way Lavin manages the roster.  He lets all the guys know what they have to do to get to get minutes.  He tells the guy who is fifth that he is at risk of losing his starting spot, and the guy that is 8-9 that he is at risk of getting out of the rotation.  It helps keep the kids motivated on both sides of the cutoffs.

(Shout out to the guy who looks forward to my posts about syntax)

Lavin said on the post game that players didn't start because of academic reasons. He didn't get into specifics but it seemed like DJ and Brownlee missed some classes.

That's not quite what he said. He said one player was being disciplined. In some cases ... message / in anothe case ... team policy.

"What we did here tonight was kind of a combination of things. It was different with each change in the starting lineup. In some cases, it was just trying to send a message, put a little fire under the fanny in terms of attitudes and approach. In another case, it was a very minor, but still important team policy in terms of class attendance.

## Player Name            FG-FGA FG-FGA FT-FTA OF DE TOT PF  TP  A TO BLK S MIN
24 Burrell, Justin..... f  1-4    0-0    1-5    2  3  5   0   3  0  2  0  1  16

Burrell has the tools, but I am 97% convinced that he does not have the mind set or mental capacity to be to be a star or even be a have a lead role player on this team or any team.

Last night Lavin gave him his chance and Burrell failed. Took 4 short early 2 barley hit the rim, could not hit a free throw, and had 2 turnovers. I feel like I am on Monday Night Count down when I say COMMON MAN!!!

After that, Justin played with no energy and did not even look like he wanted the ball.

Justin is truly an enigma.  He has all the physical tools to be a very good player and has shown flashes of brilliance but for some reason he just has never put it all together.  Burrell has been my favorite player for the last 4 years and I truly hope he can bring it all together under the new staff.  I still remember watching him at the Dome his freshman year and going for something like 18 and 10 against Cuse and thinking to myself how good he was going to be.  It is all about confidence with Justin if he misses his first couple shots he begins to shy away and defers to the other guys.

I am curious to see the next two games.  I think they've had a couple of days to rest from the jet lag - though 3 games in 4 days 5 timezones away can be a lot.  But the next game is Tuesday - enough days to rest and work out some more of the kinks.

We'll know more about the team then.

Sounds like everyone was kind of out of synch.  It is not unreasonable that the guys are jet lagged and somewhat lackadaisical.  Let's see how they do next game.  A win is a win.

interesting stat was the the number of wagner turnovers (21 for the game) and our points off of turnovers (21 for the game BUT only 6 in second half).  I saw more energy in the first half and believe that was the cause of the differential.  Because of our poor shooting ability, points off turnovers are extremely important to this team's ability to win games.

we should find out who is coaching free throw shooting at Wagner.  their 77% last night was "below" their season average which is around 83%.  last year they shot 61%.

The hurleys look good together and got the most out of their team.  I was glad they did not do what Steve did in the SMC game and start fouling on the inbound with 3 minutes to go and make us beat them from the line; they might have beaten the gang that can't shoot straight.  Does Bobby get his own head coaching job next year??

As an astute poster called "fun" noted on another board

The reason Wagner is a better free throw shooting team this year than last is because Michael Orock graduated. Last year he shot 43 percent from the line - in nearly 30 minutes a game he was 52 for 120. You take his FT percentage out of last years stats and Wagner FTP improves from 60 percent to 70 percent. Add freshman Latif Rivers to the mix - he's 26 for 26 from the line this year, and as a freshman he managed that without the Hurleys explaining to him that he should try and throw the round thing thru the metal thing - and that makes 80 percent. It's not the coaching.

They may have picked to finish 8, but that doesn't mean they'll finish 8th.

We saw how they played. Part of it was us, but in fairness, some of it was good guard play on their part.

Hurley would seem the perfect for the Seton Hall job down the line.  Of course, they have a new coach already.  He'll be a HC in a big conference within 5 years i would imagine
