St. John's does not have fond memories of its last game at Fordham's Rose Hill Gymnasium. The Johnnies lost and, as a result, decided to stop playing area opponents on the road. Then-coach Mike Jarvis and the administration didn't want to give city talent more reasons to consider another local destination.
The inter-borough rivalry resumed last year, returns to the Bronx Saturday at 7 and will be staged at the Garden next year, but losing recruits is no longer a concern for St. John's (5-2). New coach Steve Lavin has a nationally ranked recruiting class with players from the city as well as all over the country and is generating a national buzz none of the locals can match.
"On a recruiting front, we want our share from the tri-state area, but we aren't so reliant that we can't go coast to coast and go overseas and climb the ladder," Lavin said.
