Each year there is a surprise team in the Big East, a team that has been battered by bigger, stronger, more experienced opponents and has left the court punch drunk after leads turned to brutal losses.
West Virginia, which won the 2010 Big East Tournament and made a Final Four run, was that team last year.
The surprise team this year may very well be the one that counter-punched the Mountaineers last night in their own building. St. John's dominated the paint, controlled the boards, executed its offense with assembly-line efficiency and smothered West Virginia in an 81-71 victory in the Big East opener for both squads.
