No Hangover [Calm Before the Storm]
« on: December 31, 2010, 06:03:03 PM »
Last year, a weaker Providence team came to Carnesecca Arena and had their defense opened up like a banana. The Red Storm gave up 42 points in the second half and found it hard to score against a team that spent a whole season not playing defense. The Johnnies turned the ball over without Malik Boothe in the lineup and had little offensive flow.

Not only can St. John’s not afford to lose to this Friar team if they want to contend for  a spot in the top half of the league, they need to avenge what was a disturbing loss for the squad.

I fear our guys have been reading the press clippings and fan boards too much over the past two days:

Can't have a let down here. Too much at stake. I think we come out strong.

Providence can hit threes from all over. Actually, we're the only BE team that doesn't.

But they're not imposing. We should push them around as we did WV.

From what I've seen of them (their games against Rhode Island and Cuse) and what I've read we really only have to closely watch Brooks from the arc.  Hopefully our zone works as well as it did vs. WVU and our offense stays efficient and we can pull out a W.  I have a feeling this will be a wild up and down game and my prediction is...

St. John's- 87
Providence- 85

We need to build up our equity before our tough games start.

This game is almost a must win as we'll probably lose at least 3 of the next 4.

I can see why people feel we could lose to providence(10-0) @ home.  We have not won there since 2000 and some think we could lose a bunch after this.  However, remember guys. although the same team from a year ago we have an outstanding coaching staff that prepares this team better than i have seen in the last 10 years.  We have shot exceptionally well the last two games.  If it was just one game I could see some doubt but two games in a row starts a trend and good one at that.  I really feel we win these next 2 games.  They are must wins and I think the coaching staff and team knows that which is why we will continue to see good game play and coaching management.  We are not always going to shoot lights out, but this team is so much more than one dimensional like the last few years which is why we are going to win games even not our best. I am not saying this off one win, but you have to see this team is far better than last year even with the loses to Fordham and St. Bonis.   We were picked 6th for a reason and these two games will continue to show that we are a team that can compete and win.

Happy New Years to all.

dont see our guys coming out playing flat...the last few years they have been plagued by great efforts followed by disgraces, with critics calling the great effort a fluke that couldnt be repeated consistently...i would hope the guys are looking to come out and destroy this team out of the gate...i dont see them being complacent at 1-0

Their guards are better than ours. Stop Brooks and Council, get the W.

Thanks Peter. Helpful article although "their defense opened up like a banana," is - shall we say - hard to digest.

Friars lack spice with no Curry this year.  a doulbe shot of J&B will hopefully leave them with a hangover as the lads look at this as another  payback game after being embarrassed at home last year.

I expect a lot of pressure which will mean more minutes for the Maliks--Boothe may need to go 30.  This is a win we simply need to get.  Providence has won 12 of the last 14 (gross) and they embarassed us last year without Boothe.  Looking at the rest of our conference road schedule this is one of two of the most winnable games for us.

Going by the past formula, this is a game we lose in disappointing fashion.  For some reason I think it has changed because the guys seemed very confident yet grounded in the interviews/videos leaving for Providence.

Not a great matchup for us.  Paris will probably have to get more minutes to slow down Council and/or Brooks.

the zone defense will really be put to the test today, Providence loves shooting 3's...hopefully our team can rotate quickly and not get torched
