The college basketball adage about experienced players coming through in the clutch shined through Saturday night at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center.
With 2:21 to play, the Providence College Friars held a two-point lead over St. John’s and had their 8,157 fans in a frenzy. Yet in what seemed like only a heartbeat later, the youthful Friars were deflated and Paris Horne and his senior-laden Red Storm teammates were gleefully celebrating a sweet 67-65 victory.
Horne, one of 10 seniors on the SJU squad, snapped a tie with a deep wing 3-pointer with 28 seconds to play. At the other end of the floor, Horne went under PC star Marshon Brooks and drew a game-turning offensive foul call. Those two plays were enough to turn the tide in favor of the Storm (9-3, 2-0), who won their second Big East road game of the young season.
“When Paris made that shot, I call it basketball karma,” said first-year St. John’s coach Steve Lavin. “Paris is a hard-working player, always in the gym getting shots up. As he released the ball, I was thinking he deserves it.”
