What is Norm Roberts thinking right now?
« on: January 04, 2011, 10:33:02 AM »
He sat Dwight Hardy and Justin Brownlee on the bench last year, and if he had played them, he might still be here.

These guys could go from the bench to first teamers to the league. Well, Brownlee to the league. Hardy to Europe.

Last year it was looking like Hardy to Malaysia, and Brownlee to Korea.

No need to beat a dead horse. So many better things to talk about.

Just in fairness to Poison, my dad who is a huge college b ball fan but not really a SJU fan called me last night to say he can't believe that this is the same team I made him watch from time to time last season. In another sign things have turned I had stopped getting tickets to games becuase I literally could not drag anyone to see us play. This season I have tickets to some games and I have had a bunch of people ask who I was going to the game with.

I wonder what Avery Patterson is eating for breakfast?

I wonder what Ricky Torres' last movie watched was?

I wonder how Chris Casey's doing?

I bet he's happy for the kids...but like Dave said so many better things to talk about.

He spoke about the team on SNY post game show after the PU game.  He was very happy for the team and felt they showed great improvement and he also commented (positively) the coaching they were getting this year.  I also wonder about the Hardy/Brownlee changes and whether it was a JC thing as some people note that the first year in the big time is a transition year, similar to what a freshman goes through at the stepped up level of competition.  Similar to H/B is Casey Mitchell of West Virginia.  Believe he was Brownlee's teammate in JC and he struggled last year averaging about 3 points per game and now his is the leading scorer in his senior year like Hardy.

Why hate on Norm? He wasn't the best coach but he was always professional and a nice guy. I hope the best for him and hopefully he'll get a coaching job soon.

It just shows how important a coach's vision is for his program.  Two men can look at the same roster and see the same things in practice and just have two completely different ideas for the best way to win.  Norm thought it was through bruising, ugly ball with DJ, Evans, and Horne and Lavin saw it the same way I did with making Brownlee and Hardy the keys to the team and playing smart, skilled basketball.

I got some heat on redmen for my "Hardy v. Hatten" thread when I said:

"We all remember Hatten as a machine. I am expecting huge things out of Hardy this season so I looked at Hatten's stats to see how he compares. Hattens PPG in his senior year were much higher than I remember at 22 ppg. I think with increased minutes, plays drawn for him, a more uptempo game, and an extra year Hardy can really put up some silly #'s."
