Did they change the pipes running into Madison Square Garden this season?

There's certainly something in the water. The Knicks are 19-14 after years of wandering in the desert and now St. John's is making noise in the Big East. They beat Georgetown in a 61-58 thriller Monday night when Justin Brownlee followed a Dwight Hardy miss for a putback with 10 seconds to play.

The 10 seniors had heard all about the heralded signing class that new St. John’s coach Steve Lavin was busy assembling since he took the job last April.
 
It’s a nine-man group that includes a half-dozen players ranked in the Top 100 – and a class that’s supposed to mark the dawn of a new era for the Red Storm.

So, who could blame the current cast for feeling neglected and tossed away by virtually everyone except Louisville coach Rick Pitino – who picked St. John’s first in the Big East preseason poll?

"We understand,” said one of the St. John’s seniors, forward Justin Burrell. "This is a business. The train doesn’t stop after we leave.”

It was a rare miss for Hardy, who finished with 20 points by employing the classic New York point guard skill of making the guy in front of you look foolish all night long. On the play that led to victory, he juked Eric Freeman of the Hoyas so severely that Bill Raftery broke out the classic "lingerie" line to illustrate the way he left his underthings behind.

Now, the Johnnies may have turned a corner with their 61-58 win over No. 13 Georgetown Monday night. A win over a ranked team can help reshape a team's season from also-ran into NCAA Tourney contender. If that's the case, the Red Storm has a chance to remake the entire perception of their program in one month.

Including those already played, St. John's plays nine games in the month of January. Seven of those games are against ranked teams, including a game against the No. 4 team in the nation and, to top it all off, a nationally-televised tilt against the No. 1 team in the land.

Dwight Hardy has really become a prime time scorer with 20 points, including two free throws with two seconds left to ice the game. Justin Brownlee added 15 points, including the game-winning putback on a Hardy miss, and seven rebounds.

Senior forward Justin Burrell pointed to the Red Storm's loss to Fordham as a pivotal point.

"We definitely needed this game to keep our momentum going. I always go back to the Fordham game, ever since then we've been a changed team," said Burrell. "We did so many good things that game and after that we built on them. So we definitely needed this game to keep our momentum going and keep our confidence going."

Start with as basic an improvement as the team’s locker room. For years, the Red Storm had used one of the Garden’s drab auxiliary locker rooms. On Monday, because Lavin simply asked, the Red Storm was able to walk past those high-school-caliber locker rooms and take up residence in the Knicks’ dressing room.

On game days, the room is now converted into a personal space for the Red Storm.

“We have our own carpet with our own colors and emblem, nameplates that slide on top of the lockers, big leather chairs with the St. John’s logo, photographs of current and former players on the walls to cover the Knicks stuff — that really cherries it out,” Lavin said in a telephone interview Sunday. “It would have felt like we were playing on the road or at a neutral site for every game and be a disadvantage for us, as opposed to for other teams.”

It came down to basketball at its most basic: One-on-one and everyone crashes the boards. May the better man win. May the better team win.

Senior guard Dwight Hardy of The Bronx dribbled the ball at the top of the key and sized up Georgetown's Jason Clark.

"I had my mind made up," Hardy said. "I was going to the basket."

Senior forward Justin Brownlee of Tifton, Ga., saw Hardy make his in-and-out move and crashed the boards. When Hardy's layup try over a trio of Georgetown defenders was a little too strong, Brownlee was all alone for the putback.

Burrell is a quote machine:

But these St. John's seniors have been through it all, including new coach Steve Lavin's dreaded Triangle Rebounding Drill. Lavin demands that three players crash the boards on every play in practice. If not, all the players must run sideline to sideline 17 times in less than one minute and two seconds.

"Sometimes he's nice," Burrell deadpanned. "He gives us a minute four or a minute six."

I'm glad that the media gets to spread the gospel of Burrell quotes. Almost as good as Lavin quotes.

Lingerie hahaha

Madison Square Garden played host to a special moment on Monday night, but its primary architect could not fully enjoy it.

After seven lead changes in the final six minutes, St. John's trailed No. 13 Georgetown 59-58 with 23 seconds left. Following a timeout, Dwight Hardy had the ball, and the game, in his hands a few feet beyond the top of the key.

The 8,897 fans in attendance were on their feet, buzzing. And after drawing up an isolation play for Hardy, Steve Lavin could only stand and watch as Hardy made his approach to the basket.
