From afar, Steve Lavin says, the head coaching position at St. John's always looked like one he'd be interested in; one with great possibilities.

"For me to get back into coaching, it had to be the right fit and the right time," the former UCLA coach and ESPN analyst says.

"I always thought if that job ever opened, it would be ideal: the tradition, the heritage, the recruiting base, Madison Square Garden for your home games, a great city and a great conference. There really are more similarities to UCLA than there are differences."

When the job opened last spring following the dismissal of Norm Roberts, another thing occurred to Lavin.

"Would they want to hire a guy from the West Coast?" the San Francisco native says.

Turns out the answer was yes, and it hasn't taken long for Lavin to put his stamp on the Red Storm.
