Steve Lavin is no longer the manic 30-something coach who 10 years ago gave as good as he got to his critics. Then, he was the besieged wunderkind at U.C.L.A. who led a roster of underclassman blue chips known as the Baby Bruins.
“What was it like to roam the sideline made famous by John Wooden?” he was asked on the eve of the 2001 N.C.A.A. men’s basketball tournament.
“A gigantic dartboard,” he said in his staccato fashion. “A big piñata that’s going to get whacked. A punching bag.”
