AP Story

Dwight Hardy scored 26 points and St. John's stunned No. 3 Duke 93-78 on Sunday, capping the Red Storm's run of eight straight games against ranked teams with their third win.

It wasn't that St. John's (12-8) beat the Blue Devils (19-2), it was the way it happened.

The Red Storm, who had lost three straight and five of six, took control early and had a 46-25 lead at halftime. Duke, which came into the game shooting 40 percent from 3-point range, missed its first 10 shots from behind the arc and made one of 13 in the half.

The Blue Devils' overall shooting wasn't a whole lot better as they shot 29.6 percent (8 of 27) in the half -- they entered the game shooting 48.1 percent from the field -- and they were careless with the ball as well, committing 11 turnovers, one off their season average for a game.

Duke lost a game. That's not big news.

But what's this? They lost to an unranked opponent?

They lost to an unranked opponent by DOUBLE DIGITS?

Now that's a story.

A quick take on St. John's win over Duke at Madison Square Garden on Sunday afternoon.

WHAT IT MEANS: St. John's (12-8, 4-5 in Big East) records its biggest win of the season, stunning a national TV audience by beating the No. 3 team in the country. This is the kind of signature win that will pay huge dividends when the NCAA Tournament selection committee convenes in March. St. John's had lost seven straight to Duke. St. John's has now beaten three ranked teams in a season for the first time since 2001-02.

Duke (19-2, 6-1 in ACC) suffers its second loss of the season. Both defeats came against unranked teams -- Florida State knocked the Blue Devils off 66-61 on Jan. 12 in Tallahassee.

St. John's sent a shiver through all of college basketball on Sunday afternoon and may have begun its ascent back to the upper echelon of the sport.

The Red Storm played its best half of the season - possibly its best half in a decade or longer - to open the game and rolled to a 93-78 decimation of third-ranked Duke before a roaring crowd of 19,353 at the Garden. It was St. John's first regular-season sellout at the Garden since it beat the Blue Devils March 2, 2003.

Jogging onto the Madison Square Garden floor on Sunday afternoon, the Duke Blue Devils were greeted by the St. John’s student section with the inhospitable chant of “over-rated.” By late in the second half of an nonconference shocker, what had sounded like overstatement resonated as prophecy.

ESPN Dana O'Neil Blog....

As I watched the final seconds tick away in a 93-78 St. John’s win over third-ranked Duke, I kept thinking of Gary Charles.

The longtime director of the Long Island Panthers, Charles is one of those guys you go to when you want to get your arms around what matters and who matters in New York City basketball.

Back in September, I called him and asked him what the most important thing Steve Lavin could do at St. John’s.

“Win back New York,’’ Charles told me. “Everybody’s been waiting for that. There’s nothing like sitting in the Garden, watching St. John’s. People want that back.’’

As big as St. John’s stunning 93-78 upset of No. 3 Duke was Sunday at Madison Square Garden, the Johnnies still have some serious work to do to make the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2002.

“It helps out a lot, confidence-wise, and of course when they look at our resume, it helps out a lot,” said senior forward Justin Burrell, who had 20 points and 9 rebounds in the blowout.

How good does it feel for the Red Storm seniors to finally beat Duke?

How good does it feel for the fans to see a Duke victory after 8 years?

How good does it feel to see a St. John's team score 93 points in a 40-minute game?

Yes, at the end of the day, it's only one win. But on this day, a few new Red Storm fans are "born." Some old fans are happy to wear their colors and talk about the good old days.

And the Red Storm seniors have a reason to pat themselves on the back... because they dropped the Duke Blue Devils in front of a packed and rocking Madison Square Garden AND a captivated national TV audience on CBS, 93-78.

The Dukes of Midtown

St. John’s had been waiting for a marquee win since the end of the Mike Jarvis era.  Two coaches and nearly eight years later, the program finally has one.

With suffocating defense and five players scoring in double figures, the Johnnies (12-8) fed off a sellout crowd at Madison Square Garden to shock the world with a 93-78 upset win over third-ranked reigning national champion Duke. (19-2)  The Red Storm played solid, fundamentally sound basketball through the first half; and did not rest on their laurels after taking a 21-point cushion into the intermission.  In fact, the Johnnies came on stronger than ever despite being outscored 53-47 over the final stanza.  The sellout and win over Duke were accomplishments last seen prior to today on March 2, 2003; when Marcus Hatten made a game-winning free throw with no time left on the clock to give St. John’s a one-point win at the “World’s Most Famous Arena.”

As St. John's pushed its lead over Duke to 66-45 eight minutes into the second half, a sold-out Madison Square Garden rose to its feet as the teams went to a television timeout. While Mike Krzyzewski tracked down the nearest referee to chastise, his slick-haired adversary on the other side of the scorer's table ran out to meet his players, arms flapping above his head to help draw the crowd even louder.

Over the last 25 years, Duke has established itself as the premier program in college basketball, and the Garden has been its home away from home in the Northeast corridor.

But St. John's took a first step toward making the Garden its own home court again Sunday when it devoured the No.3 Blue Devils, 93-78, before a sellout crowd of 19,353, about 60% of which was cheering for St. John's.

It was the first time the Johnnies have beaten Duke in eight years.

They were bloodied physically, bludgeoned emotionally and seemingly left for a dead season -- a shattered dream, a lifetime of regret.

After seven straight games against ranked teams, St. John's -- having lost five of them -- was reduced to college basketball rubble.

One player wanted a team meeting after a 25-point humiliation at Georgetown on Wednesday night, while another said: "Don't panic."

There was only one path the St. John's coaching staff considered to stop the bleeding. For 72 hours it treated the players like gladiators, hoping a hardened team could slay the basketball Goliath known as Duke and save the season.
