Felipe Lopez
« on: March 06, 2011, 08:57:43 AM »
I'll admit that when i first saw him there, I remembered all of the great wins he helped us achieve at St.John's over the years.

All 4 of them. I love how he calls people "ignorant" if they don't think he was great and says they're not good at math. Man, that's a softball if I ever saw one. I also remember a fan trying to tell me how bad we were going be with this joker Thornton who was expected to take Lopez' place.

Felipe was a great representative of the university and good 4 year basketball player.  No need to take pot shots.  He is 3rd all time on the scoring list behind Mullin and Sealy.  Thats just awful, huh?   Its not his fault he was over hyped and nice personic fans had unrealistic expectations. Get over it.

Sometimes you really come off as a bitter, old man.

What a shock - poison is showing no class.

Felipe gave his all for us, his all was just not quite as amazing as we thought it would be.  He was still a first round draft pick.

Saw mo diakite and andre stanley too.  Great to see alumni out.

Clearly, neither of you ever saw Felipe play.

I love that "he was 3rd all time in scoring" bs. The dumbest argument I've ever heard in his defense. Lopez was a black hole. He'd score 23 points on 7-21 from the floor, and we'd lose by 15.

That's make him worthy of being mentioned in the sentence as Mullin and Sealy?
Lopez was never at any point in the same league as Malik Sealy. Never.

If you think he was great, you don't know the first thing about basketball.
Ron Artest was great. Bootsy Thornton was great. Erick Barkley was great.

Did he not sign an autograph for you or steal your girlfriend or something...Felipe was great...just because he didn't live up to the hype of that Sports Illustrated doesn't mean he wasn't a great player at St. John's.

wrong again poison.  At least your consistent.  I even made the mistake of flying to the united center to watch them lose to Detroit.   Did Felipe live up to the hype?  No.   Was that his fault?  no.  Did he play under a bad coach?  yes.   A terrible point guard?  yes.

Just seems odd that after the most successful regular season in 10 years, you start a thread disparaging an alumni.  Why don't you go out and kick some puppies before lunch today.  maybe make you feel better.

Detroit was a microcosm of his career.
His ego killed whatever chance he had to be good.

Are all of Felipe's coaches over his 10 year college/pro career to blame for his lack of success? You're gonna blame Fran, who made him a 1st team all BE player?

So now he is a first team all be player bc of a coach!  Or was he a bad black hole?  Cant argue both ways.

You are an embarassment.  This is a happy day for us and all of the alumni - including those who played.  You just need to be bitter, huh.   Grow up.

Sorry Kid, sure he was very good as a senior. Good for him.
He was the 4th best player on that team after Postell, Artest and Grant.

Dude, take issue with the writer, not Felipe.  No one is arguing he's the greatest Johnny of all-time,  He was a solid 4 year player who made some money in the league.   He always carried himself with class and dignity, even when fans, like you, tore him to pieces.  He's a classy kid and deserves some respect.  your entitled to your opinion however, as flawed as it may be.

Boo, thats where you're wrong. He didn't always carry himself with class. He expected to be treated like royalty from the moment he elected to come here. Only Fran was able to scream defense at him loud enough for it to sink in.

He tried to split the double or even triple team and he ignored the rest of his teammates who became increasingly
mad at his lack of team play.

Well, i never got that impression.  Then again, it was over ten years ago, so maybe its my memory.   Lord knows, its not what it used to be.  I'll agree to disagree.  I always like Felipe and rooted  hard for him to succeed.  Was his career a disappointment from a personal and team standpoint, probably,  but i don't think that makes him any less a part of the St. John's family.

Boo, fair enough. I know I'm too hard on him. I fully admit that.
While it's not fair to call him a failure, it's also not appropriate for sportswriters 13 years later calling him a huge success and part of the University.

They were the ones that were all over him after Uconn, Nova and all of the top BE teams ate him alive for 3 years.

From the very beginning, the University went about it the wrong way. As a freshman, he should of came off the bench. He never learned to work for anything until it was too late. Coaching is what was largely considered the reason why he didn't win here, bur it was coaching that elevated his game enough to make him a 1st round NBA draft pick, which btw, wasn't a good choice at all.

I was a freshman when he was a senior, from what I can remember the 96/97 team could have used a shooter and a PG. Tarik Turner is a much better broadcaster then player. Felipe was a good player but he couldnt shoot. I never met him but he seemed like a nice guy. The only negative thing I have to say about him is he made me late for class every Tuesday and Thursday. We both had an early class in Marilac, then we both traveled torwards St. Johns Hall. I was usually behind him and had to wait until he kissed and hugged every fat busted girl on the way. It was quite the traffic jam.

There's a reason why they took the names off the back of the jerseys.

Graceful and athletic as a gazelle.  A scintillating joy to watch in the open court.  Played on some very poor teams.  Often when he subbed out of the game,  what remained on the court couldn't beat a high school team.

For the youngins comparing this teams best athlete, Paris Horne, to him would be like comparing a Clydsdale to a thouroughbred with no offense to my favorite player Hilton intended.   Fast as h*ll and leapt out of the building plus he was a legit 6' 5"/6' 6".

Does not deserve bad-mouthing.

Carmine, the two best wins Lopez experienced happened only after Mahoney finally recognized that James Scott should have started at the 2 guard from the very beginning. Michigan on the road and Syracuse in MSG.
Lopez was never the best player on any SJ's team.
