Really sad news but coach is a fighter and I'm sure he has a great medical team behind him so I am hoping for a speedy and full recovery.

Thank God it was caught early! Coach should spread the word on getting those prostate exams when the time comes. What is the age that is suggested for men to be tested? 40?

I would think this is part of the reason Lav and crew decided to continue to wear the sneakers and no ties.  Hopefully coach beats this quickly and becomes a spokesman for early testing.

I've been there and am in remission.  the treatment options vary but the prognosis is good as it was caught early (they said it was discovered in the fall and treatment will begin shortly, very similar to mine).  I believe a number of other college coaches have been through it also.  Besides it being caught early Steve's upbeat personality will help on the cure.

I hope when he recovers (and I do not say if as the success rate for treatment is high 90"s when detected early), Steve with his gift of gab will take a lead in educating men to be tested regularly so that they also can have early detection.  if you are 50 (40 if African American) and have not been tested, please go and take the test--it is a simple blood test to check your PSA level.  you need to have a tracking so doctors can see if you are rising quickly as that could be a sign even if you are not above the considered risk level.

I told Lavin today that Cancer pales in comparison to the arduous task of climbing the Big East. He did that so he'll beat this. He got a good laugh.

My prayers extend to him and his family. I really hope this doesn't knock him down.

Thoughts and prayers to coach and his family.  Since it was caught early he should be fine.  Great job by coach for going on his regular checkups.

This.

My dad went through the treatments a couple of years ago, and he's doing great. A little weak at times when he had the treatments, but it was much less scary than I thought it would be.

Lavin will beat prostate cancer down too.

Get well, Steve. It was early and all will turn out fine! I will say prayers.

I had two scares, both with the blood test, but biopsies turned out okay. Living with the idea was bad enough, but the prognosis is so good when caught early.

Everyone should get their PSA tested.

First of all, redslope, best wishes for continued success with your remission. Conventional wisdom is, as you state, begin prostate testing at 50, and at 40 if you're African American. However, Coach Lavin, who's 46, is a prime example of someone who has a great shot at beating this cancer because he didn't wait until 50 to begin testing. As you note, redslope, it's a simple, inexpensive blood test (and most primary physicians can give a quick, painless digital exam during an annual checkup), so why wait until you're 50? Get started in your 40s. If Coach had waited, his cancer would have had a full four years to go untreated.

Recruitingis the fun stuff, but anybody know how Steve Lavin's prostate cancer treatment went/is going?  Hopefully all is well with our coach and he can put these hurdles past him.

Well this week is the first of the Summer Camps.  So I'm guessing it went well if he's knee deep in that.  Then the open period starts after the 4th.

Plus this summer will be a little different than last.  He doesnt have 10 schollies to give out.  The focus will be on Kyle and Gathers and laying the early groundwork for 2013.
