Norm to Florida?
« on: April 12, 2011, 11:19:16 AM »
Apparently Billy Donovan is on the verge of losing all 3 of his current assistants.  Shyatt left for Wyoming.  Rick Pitino's son could be returning to Louisville to replace Masiello who went to Manhattan.  And Rob Lanier could be headed to Texas to replace Rodney Terry who left Barnes' staff to take the Fresno job.

Former Arkansas HC John Pelphrey returns to Florida to replace Shyatt.  And Goodman is now reporting that Norm could be asked to join the staff as a replacement for either Lanier or Pitino assuming at least one of the other 2 leave as well.

Official.  Norm to join Donovan at Florida.  Bit ironic since SJU initially targeted Donovan last year AFTER they fired Roberts.  Good for him.  Like Shyatt he will get some credibility back being on Billy's staff, so will Pelphrey.

Good for Norm but he better not start stealing any NY recruits!

Good luck Norm, all the best in Florida. Hope things go well for you; I guess SNY was just a place-holder, unlike many other coaches who make a career out of television.

I think the SNY folks knew that, and would rather have guys know they can come in and spout knowledge on SNY then get hired somewhere else - makes it seem like a good job when you get s**tcanned! You know Tim Welsh was trying to get out of there... then he had too much to drink and then drove like a fool.

Even if he isn't actually a great recruiter, he has at least proven himself adept as setup man for a great recruiter at a marketable school in the past. I'm assuming he'll do fine. Good luck to him, and hopefully this is the last we ever hear about him on these boards.

Norm built a pretty good Big East team with marginal Big East talent

He's trustworthy, loyal, reliable, good eye for talent, hard and tireless worker, been involved with Big 12 and Big East, has recruiting ties in multiple areas....he's very well qualified for the position he's in.

Dave, you say he's a tireless worker. AAU coaches that spoke to the press disagreed with that sentiment. Loyalty is an empty compliment. Did he turn down offers from the Washington Wizards or from PAC 10 schools that came calling? Bringing him in as assistant makes sense, but only because he's nice. He doesn't have to close anything. All he had to do is sell Donovan the way he sold Self. It's where he belongs.

The guy is just a NYC name who has absolutely no chance to land anything better so Billy can use him for legwork which is about all he's good for.  I would guess the next time the NBA comes knocking Billy's going to go now that that the magic has faded.  Norm probably thinks he'd have a shot at replacing him too. Sorry Norm.

Billy burned his bridge with the NBA with the way he handled the Magic fiasco.  It will be awhile before he gets another sniff.

The one thing this might do is lessen the monetary commitment SJU has to Coach Roberts.

Depending on how the buyout is/was structured, Roberts overall buyout could be partially supplemented by his Florida assistant salary.

For example, John Pelphrey's buyout calls for $600K per year for the next few years from Arkansas.  His salary at Florida will be around $200K.
That means to meet the entire $600K Arkansas merely has to put up $400K to Florida's $200K.  So Pelphrey still gets his money it is just that Arkansas no longer has to foot the bill for the WHOLE $600K.
