2011/2012 Roster only 10 players
« on: May 25, 2011, 10:53:17 AM »
Any one else concerned that as of right now we have only 10 players.
We were all concerned about saving scholarships for 2012 class. (Jevon, Anderson Gathers etc.)
But with Polee leaving- down to 10. And even if MoMo
or Harrow were to have come it was to play in 2012.

We are 2 injuries/ non qualifiers away from a very very short roster.
A 5th year Graduating senior (I read about that exception) would be perfect.
If not, I wonder if staff is still looking for a very late 2011 addittion (JC?)

It is certainly concerning.  Wondering if a guy like uchebo reconsiders JUCO unless it is a grades problem, or if we try to grab somebody else.  I'm sure staff will consider all options.

We may only have 10 players but they are quality players. I'm more concerned they are so young but what can you do. At this point Lavin must concern himself with getting the best players .

We were one of the deepest teams in the country last year in terms of depth/distribution of talent and we really only had 10 men get time, and only 9 guys get over 6.1 minutes. 8 guys played in at least 31 of our 33 games, and Stith played in 26 and Coker in 22.

Worried about injuries---sure, but these kids are going to be hungry and are so damn versatile they can be plugged in anywhere.

Worried?

Not at all.

As others pointed out look how many people played last year.  We technically lose no players from next year's team with no seniors.  You can't just use up all the ships for the sake of it.  Go to battle with the 10 guys we have now.  It's plenty.  Practices should be a blast.  Then we start evening out the ships with another dynamite 2012 class.  Eventually ppl depart early and all things are well on the class balance.

Gonzaga was one of the deepest teams in the country last year.  They had 11 players who played over 9 mpg.  Not many were close to that.

I'd be curious to know what percentage of schools use their full allotment of 13 ships and how many play 10 mpg.

Don't most teams usually only run out 8-9 man rotations anyway.  The other scholarship guys barley get any time.

with the in coming class we have a lot of interchangeability.  they are not a bunch of on position players who can't switch positions.  that will help with players in foul trouble or an injury or two

And when we have 2-3 injuries? I don't believe that Lavin is finished recruiting for this coming season. Just a guess, but I doubt he's as careless as Roberts was with depth.

2-3 serious injuries?  Like out for the year?  Pretty big IF.  Like IF I had 6 numbers instead of 4 I would have won the lotto.

I think we're done for this year.

Would it be that unlikely of a chance for two guys to miss games at the same time of the year? Even if one were to go down that still leaves one of our other guys going against a walk on in practice.
I'm not saying I would prefer to sign one more recruit, I trust lavin to do the judging. I like the idea of having open scholarships for gathers, Anderson, and jevon, but having only ten scholarship players on the roster can be risky.

nope. Not concerned about anything. Before Lavin got here, 18 months ago imagine the actual concern we would have had for what would happen this year under Norm? Imagine? Yeah, we replaced 9 seniors but we replaced them all with top 100 recruits and standout JUCO players. There may be growing pains, but considering the last decade of St Johns ball, I'm really not concerned at all. This is a transition year anyway, and it's a hell of a lot better with Lavin's 10 than it would have been with Norms 12. Of course there are concerns for 2011 specifically, but with 9 kids graduating in 2010 that always was going to be an issue. With Coach's recruiting and his staffs tutelage of these kids, I think I have the least amount of concern possible. Whatever happens in 2011, we are in very good hands.

Looking at the talent we have 8-10, we will be absolutely fine.  Stith played double-digit minutes last season and he will likley be our 10th (in talent at least).

Syracuse made the national title game playing 7 with the Wallace-Burgain-Simms team.  We are not looking at that kind of run.

Polee transferring means we might not have to lose any transfers from this group next season.

Even if we lost 2 key guys for a month, say Harkless and Nuri, you still have a rotation of Greene/Harrison/Pointer/Sampson/GG with Pelle, Garrett, Stith off the bench. I'm fine with that. The risk of completely unbalancing your class and missing out on Gathers or Anderson isn't worth the possible reward of using two more schollies on what is left in 2011, for an instance where we may lose a couple guys to injury, and those 2 more hypothetical 2011 schollies would still be sitting behind 8 guys. In my opinion.

What he said.  The reigning national champs willl only have 10 scholarship players as well so STJ is even with them.  Bringing in someone else to practice and fill a chair on the bench is useless.

Doesn't have to be out for the year.  Just a couple weekends in a row shorthanded at the wrong time could be the difference between winning 3 of 4 and losing 3 of 4 - and THAT could be difference between NIT and NCAA....

Im not sure that having only 10 players is a big deal.   If you look at last year's roster 10 guys played but the 9th and 10th guy only avg about 20 min between them and this years 9th and 10th guys whomever they be are far more talented.  I think by midseason  you will see the same as some of these guys are going to take a year or two to really see quality minutes.  All these guys are definitely talented but it is a big jump to the college level so it is so hard to speculate at this point what 10 guys are going to give quality minutes.  Being that they are all freshman for the most part I would be happy to see a 8 man quality lineup.
