Qualifying Freshmen
« on: June 01, 2011, 04:35:32 PM »
From a zagsblog tweet:

St. John's is still waiting for 4 incoming players to become eligible for the upcoming season, industry source tells SNY.tv #stjbb

Anyone know who the 4 are?  Is this unusual this late in the spring?

One incoming player that still has some work to do is N. Lindsey.  I don't know about the other 3- or if there are 3 more.

Harkless, Linsdey and Pelle have been discussed as three inelgibles, who is the 4th?

Can they qualify in the middle of december and be alive for the majority of the season?

Is Prop 48 still around? or do we lose the recruits until the fall of 2012.

Very nervous about this? What is our back up plan, practice starts in 4 months.

90% of schools are still waiting for their kids to finish finals and graduate.  WTF is Zagoria writing?  I guess I should expect as much from somebody who's blog is a specialty blend of basketball recruiting, the summer concert series and tennis.  Tomorrow I'm starting my expert blog on college basketball recruiting, fly fishing and folk music... :idiot2:

Probably true. We are still waiting for the season to begin. But it's June.

When there is no news, why not go ahead and break some anyway?

This is just making noise for the sake of news. It's utterly pointless. The sad thing is how much weight Zags reporting carries with common folk

I've got a lot of respect for Zags, but this is some non-news and y'all have to not panic. Harkless' schoolwork is probably fine; he and Harrison have been mentioned as decent to good students. If there academic problems it's likely Lindsey - who is trying to get through JUCO in 1 and a third years, for pete's sake - and Sampson, Pointer, and Pelle, two of whom transferred to far off schools to prioritize their academics.

I'll take folk music and fly fishing over tennis.

I believe the 4th is Pointer.  Of course no one is necessarily cleared yet until they graduate but there is little concern over most of the recruits while there is still some concern over others.  I think with Pointer they think the NCAA Eligibility Center will look into QE in addition to simply his test scores and academics.

They are very confident on all of them but obviously some draw more concern then others.

Makes you wonder if the NCAA sits on their hands or picks their nose all season.  Or maybe they do both?

Is the Crack Baby Athletic Association episode from South Park any good?

Harkless, Linsdey and Pelle have been discussed as three inelgibles, who is the 4th?

Outside Lindsey (who has to complete his Juco credits over the summer) I am not sure who the other three are.  I suspect one is Pointer with questions involving his improvement and the Prep school he attends.  However at this time I think most players haven't been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse as many would not have completed all requirements until the end of the semester (although some might have already which is how some football players are able to enroll early as they completed all NCAA requirements by the middle of their Senior year in high school).

Yes, however they cannot enroll in school for the Fall semester (see below)

Is Prop 48 still around? or do we lose the recruits until the fall of 2012.?

A variation of Prop 48 is around however, the Big East does not allow for partial qualifiers.  So if they don't qualify, they would either have to go somewhere else (e.g. Remi Barry) where the school and league accepts partial qualifiers, enroll in Juco, go the Prep route for a post grad year or not enroll and try to qualify in the fall and enroll in the Spring (this would basically be a SAT issue where the kid did not score high enough).

I am not worried.  While it is possible we may lose a recruit if the Clearinghouse doesn't clear one, I think it will work out fine.  As far as a backup plan, pretty slim pickings left at this late of a date.  You go with what you have.
