I know last years sked was brutal. No doubt.

But man, I think this one's worse.

No question our SOS was big in our corner last year.  Its clear thats the strategy again.  If the young kids can stay afloat for the year with big non conference games come tournament time again we will have one of the top 20 schedules in the country.  Tough to ignore that when picking teams.  It can go a long way getting us a spot.

But man, I think this one's worse.

Seriously.

Duke = Duke, UCLA = UCLA.  Both teams lost a little but nowhere near what STJ did.

KY > St Marys
2 of AZ, Tx A&M and Miss State >> Davidson and Northwestern
Detroit =/> Az State (last year's version ended up being pretty bad)
Fordham > Fordham (they can't be any worse)
St Bonnies is the only other decent non con team STJ played.

Balance of non-con was Ball St, Drake, Columbia, Wagner - all 167 or below in the RPI so even if they're replaced by bad bad teams there's not much difference.

So much for giving the new guys a chance to settle in, acclimate and learn the system.  I wish them luck.

Oh and STJ SOS was #10 at the end of the year last year.  Can't imagine where it'll be this year.

CRGreen - Did Lav do this at UCLA as well?  Maybe it explains why the reg season record was always considered mediocre but the tournament accomplishments unexpectedly good?  ; )

I gotta disagree on Duke not losing much.  They lost their best two players, no?  Nolan and Singler. (Not counting Kyrie since he didn't play vs. us) Yeah they have stud freshman coming but still as with us, freshman.

I knew this was coming but my anti-Singler bias forced me to make my original statement.  Like you said Kyrie isn't a loss because he didn't play and I doubt Rivers will suffer the same fate Duke did lose a lot of talent.  Not enough however to drop out of every preseason top 10 I've seen so far so how bad do you honestly think they could be?  They return Curry, Dawkins, the Plumlees and they do bring in a class where four of their five guys are ranked higher by Scout than any of STJ recruits as well.  That was more my point.

Not sure of the Scout rankings.  I looked at Rivals and Gbiniji is ranked too high.  I'll take any of our SF's over him every day of the week and twice on Sunday.  Curry, Dawkins and the Plumlee's dont invoke fear in my eyes though.  Rivers is great no question and Murphy is Singler in waiting much to your chagrin.  They will get their Top 10-15 rating on name and name alone and thats fine I can't argue against that.  They had two go to guys and would have had a 3rd in Irving.  I don't see any of the returners being that go to guy.  They will have to depend on Rivers, Cook and Murphy.

Imo the staff is putting these kids thru the finger to get these kids ready for the ncaas. They won't be freshmen by the time they get there. They will be battled test

I would have liked to see an easier early season schedule for our young kids to develop chemistry ,exp, and get some wins.

What year?  If they go 6-6 OOC they're not going to the NCAA's next year anyway.  I don't see them getting over .500 in conference.

FWIW Rivals shares some of your opinions.  Of course Rivers is ranked highly (#1) and Gbinje is still ranked above all STJ's SF recruits but at least they have Pelle ranked higher than him but the rest of them are all kind of mixed together with Plumlee at the bottom.

Of course we all realize that any recruits rankings goes up as soon as they sign with Duke!

Can't wait until the final RSCI comes out so we have the definitive list for numbers obsessives like myself. ; )

Does this mean we have only three non-conference games to play with?

That Detroit game is no waste of time. They have top 100 talents in Eli Holman and Ray McCallum. They hav a chance to be at the top of the Horizon League. Game is definitely not an easy game and might be a decent win for post season consideration. Also, as mentioned - Lab can prove that he gets his recruits chances to play near home, a good selling point.

Well, until the Johnnies go to play LSU or Tulane. ;)

1) not a cupcake game.  Solid team for the resume'

2) nationally televised event on ESPN2

3) game taking place in a Midwest recruiting zone and major city.

IMO this is the furthest thing from being a waste of time, and is in my estimation, a masterful addition to our schedule.  How often can a team get an early-mid season game against a mid-major that will draw Espn air time?  A fantastic way to get on TV yet again this season in a Non-conference matchup.  Great scheduling move.

Okay, let's chill out just a bit here. "Fantastic" is a bit much. It's a worthwhile trip, but playing a Big Ten school or a Big 12 school is going to get far more coverage. Casual fans don't even know what Detroit is.

We're already playing Duke, UCLA, Kentucky and either Arizona, Tex A/M or Miss State.  How many other big time schools do you want to play?  The schedule can't go any further up really?

The hype from Vitale alone will be worth the publicity.

I think it's a trap game. Very little credit if they win. Shame if they lose. I just don't feel good about playing mid majors because the upside is low.

So you would rather play a B10 team or an NJIT?  Nothing in between.

How about a game against future Big East member TCU in Houston for D'Angelo to play in front of friends and family?

Is there really a need for that since they will be joining the conference soon anyway?
