Northeastern is 2-1 on the season under sixth-year head coach Bill Coen, after wins over Boston University and Southern Illinois.
The Huskies welcome back eight returners and four starters from a squad that went 11-20 in 2010-11 and finished tied for ninth in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Junior guards and team captains Jonathan Lee and Joel Smith were named preseason honorable mention All-Colonial Athletic Association selections on CAA Media Day.
This will be the first game of the season for the Huskies outside the comforts of Massachusetts, and just the second game outside of Boston. It is also the third road game in just four early season contests for Northeastern.

St. John’s coach Steve Lavin expects to return to the bench today when his team plays Northeastern at Carnesseca Arena. But Lavin acknowledged he has to be “mindful of my health’’ the next couple of months, with the strong possibility of missing a game here and there during his continuing recuperation from prostate surgery in early October.
Lavin, whose team is 4-2, missed Tuesday’s victory over St. Francis because his energy level was low after back-to-back games and a two-day Connecticut recruiting trip.
“I’m cancer-free,’’ Lavin said after practice yesterday. “All the blood work that has come back from the doctor says it’s straight-A’s. The only place where I am challenged is stamina and energy. Moving forward, I have to be mindful of my energy levels and how I utilize fuel.’’

St. John’s coach Steve Lavin has been back with his team the last three days and could be back on the bench Saturday when the Red Storm faces Northeastern at 4 p.m. at  Carnesecca Arena. Lavin, who had successful prostate cancer surgery on Oct. 6, doesn’t have his stamina back yet and, after coaching back-to-back games last week and then going on a two-day recruiting trip, missed Tuesday’s win over St. Francis (N.Y.). He said there was no reason for concern over his condition.

Coming off of a home win at St. Francis, the St. John's Red Storm continue to develop as a young basketball team. The St. Francis game was the first contest where the Johnnies led from beginning to end, playing a mix of man and zone defenses to keep their opponents from getting many clean perimeter looks.

In their last appearance on the court, St. John’s controlled the game from start to finish and defeated St. Francis, 63-48.
