Fwiw, Uconn worked their way in with two top talents Ryan Boatright and DeAndre Daniels after the fall signing.

They were also a top 10 team last winter/spring.   We're going to be losing more than we win.  I think it's a little more difficult to sign guys in season once the L's start pilling up.   During the summer coach's recruiting pitch looks a lot better.

Pelle and Sampson are the main reason why we are struggling so much. I say move on from them. They should be so lucky to ever step foot on a D1 court.

Who comes to St. Johns ?

My prediction: one of the 3 decommited big men recommits (likely Gathers). The staff signs a promising true big man out of high school  and a top rated juco big. This along with Amir & Wood and the guys we have now with a year of experience and added strength make STJ a top 25 caliber team early next season which will develop into a top 15 caliber team by march of next season.

I think we get two of them here for 2012.  I think we should also pickup a juco or transfer big.

If we get two of the above mentioned, plus Wood, and Garrett next week, those are four let's say plus-level recruits.  Not blue-chippers, but certainly guys who have a ceiling somewhere between contributors at the BE level to 1st/2nd team all-conference if everything breaks right for them.
If we add to that a JUCO big, or shooter, and maybe a kid outside the top 100, that gets us the 6 recruits Lavin told Mike we'll need to move forward.
I don't know how likely grabbing two of them is, but it's not a pipe-dream.

I believe Rico is the most likely of the three to commit. I feel much better about Sampson than I do Pelle, but do not think he is a shoe-in.

Adding wood and Garrett alone gives us a core of players that are all basically top 40-100 guys. that's exactly the range that perennial too 25 teams are built on.   Phil Greene was outside of that but shouldn't have been.  He's going to be real good. The more guys we get in the upper half of that range the better.  If we can add Gathers and another big body to wood next year, we're in excellent shape already.  Long way to go recruiting-wise this year.  What's most important though is that Lavin get healthy and get back on the court full time.  It is what brings the recruits in.

Certainly adding wood and Garrett gives us a stable of 8 playable recruits.  Like you said though I think we still need another big man.  There are times when we simply need a guy on the court who stands over 6'8.   Maybe not for a big chunk of minutes, but occasionally you need that big man.
And obviously a shooter wouldn't hurt.

My point is just that adding Gathers doesn't fix our problems necessarily.  Yes, it would be a huge boast to have him on the floor with GG, and it frees up Moe to play his true position,  but neither of them are really built to guard an Anthony Davis, a Drummond, a Josh Smith, any of the 17 Plumlee brothers we'll face at Duke, or a Fab Melo.  Now granted, there's very few college players ready to guard Davis or Drummond, but my point is that every good team we face is going to have a 6'10- 7 foot guy that gets minutes.   We're going to need to counter that with somebody who can spell Gift or Gathers for at least 10 minutes a night.

Drummond is not much taller than Gift.  His height is overstated.  He's barely taller than Roscoe if at all for what've seen.  His tools are speed and athleticism at his size.  Plumlees?  Do you even remember them in last years game?  God'sGift had a great game at UK.  What we needed was one more of him.  Gathers certainy gives us that and he's a huge mismatch because he's a real freak athletically.  I still think we could use one more guy though at 6'9" or more.  Would give us that big body up front to cause trouble against those taller teams.

Opeka would be huge, his shot blocking and rebounding is would be a huge help.
*wipes ketchup from his eyes* - I guess Heinz sight isn’t 20/20.
