Anybody else notice D'angelo's not looking for his shot as much lately? You can throw his stats from the Marquette game out because of the foul trouble he was in, but in the the last two games he's getting roughly half as many shots as he had been. And I don't think it's a coincidence that in these last two games we also failed to score 50 points for the first time all year. Arguably our best scorer is taking 10+ less shots than he was two weeks ago.
Here are his combined fg/3pt attempts over the last six games...
UCONN 24 shots
Louisville 24 shots
Cincinnati 24 shots
Marquette - 9 shots
Georgetown 15 shots
USF 12 shots
What changed? And what has to happen to get him back on track?
In the box score when it says a player was 4-16 from the field and 1 for 8 from three it doesn't mean he took 24 shots. It means he took 16 shots, 8 of which were from three. You're adding them together.
Against Uconn eg DH scored 17 points. He was 8 for 10 from the line (8 points), 1 for 8 from 3 (3 points), and 3 for 8 (4-16 total minus 1-8 from 3 = 3-8 from two) for 6 points. So he took 16 shots and made 4 and scored 17 points: 8 +3 +6 is 17. If he was 4 for 16 from the field and also 1 for 8 from 3 and also 8 for 10 from the foul line he'd have scored 8 + 3 + 8 = 19 points.
So really there's only 6 games where DH took more than the 12 shots he took against Georgetown: 13 vs Detroit and TX Pan Am, 18 vs Louisville and Fordham, 16 versus Uconn, 15 versus USin. The remaining 10 games he took 11 or less shots.
So the answer to your question is: nothing changed. He fouled out versus UM, he took 12 shots vs Gtown and last night Phil Greene decided to try and score and took away a few of his possessions.
Then I stand corrected (and have egg on my face) I should have known that, and you're correct, the difference isn't as stark as I indicated. But still, the 7 shots he had last night is less than half of the 16, 18, and 15 attempts he took against UCONN Louisville Cincinnati.
And the games prior to Detroit were Nuri-ball. Since then D'angelo's been the driving force of our offense IMO, and the last two games I just see him being less aggressive driving to the rim, and less confident in taking his shot. And Phil took just as many shots last night as he did in the UConn or Lousiville (8-9) games. So I'm not sure I would credit it to that. Regardless though of his # of shots though, I think it's clear Dunlap has to get D'angelo
better scoring looks than he has been as of late. Personally I like bringing him off screens, or when we're facing a zone; having him play the in-out game with Gift, who usually draws a double the second he puts the ball on the floor and attempts to spin.
Small sample size, but really I don't think you can ignore the fact that D'angelo shooting less shots than he has since Nuri left and our offense has COMPLETELY stalled the last two games. Just my opinion, and sorry for the misread on field goal attempts.. that was a forehead slapper.
