wow, is all i have to say to this comment.  hope it's not true.

"Although he's clearly nowhere near ready to contribute in the NBA at this stage, Harkless is reportedly heavily considering entering the draft this spring to gauge his professional options. Given St. John's tumultuous season and the uncertainty surrounding Coach Steve Lavin's future with the team, that might not come as a surprise, as it doesn't appear that much will change next year in regards to the way he is utilized on the interior."

He can always gauge himself and return to St. John's.  Like I've stated before, I don't think he's here no more than two seasons anyhow.  I think he returns for his sophomore year.

Moe should ask Cook how great it is to leave for the NBA before your game is ready for the pros.

Harkless still needs to get stronger, and is raw in a lot of spots.  Right now, a poor ft shooter, 3-pt shooter and has limited moves.  No doubt he could be drafted, but another year or two and he'd be well served.  He can be an unstoppable college player in another year or two.  Would make him a better NBA'er too.  I don't think Harkless is going anywhere until at least a bother year or two.

You can't dunk like that on Lebron and Melo. He's going anywhere until after his junior season, because he's not strong enough. If he was ready to sniff the league, UK, Uconn, Marq and Louisville would know.

I can tell you with certainty that the goal is to leave after NEXT season. Moe has unfinished business at St. John's and would only consider leaving St. John's this year if he was guaranteed to be a lotto pick which doesn't appear to be likely in this loaded draft class.

People must understand that Harkless leaving after his soph season is a win-win.  Lavin gets a player like Harkless to lotto pick in his first 2 seasons and it will open the floodgates of talent even more.  We will replace Harkless when the time comes, with another phenomenal wing or two.  We already have two other good ones in Pointer and Garrett on the team.  I actually think Garrett will be a good one with some work.  Can't worry about losing some of our talent to the pro's. That's exactly what we want, and exactly what Lavin is selling.  It's the reason top talent will want to play here.  It means we're going into reloading mode instead of rebuilding mode.

Everybody around Harkless knows he's not ready yet.  This is a loaded draft class.  Harkless can enter the draft twice as good after soph season.  It's a win-win for SJU but the kid needs at least another year and IMO he's a guaranteed lottery pick in 2013.

It's a little unsettling even talking about replacing Harkless when we've had him for 20 games, and we've lost 11 of them.

Knicks have lost plenty of games with Melo.  One thing doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the other.

I hear you, but it doesn't look good if a kid comes here for a cup of coffee. We need pros, but we also need to show that our players care about the program. This is not a dire situation. He can improve in a lot of areas over the next 2-3 years.

Like I said, he needs at least one more season but not more.  Gotta support the kid if he's ready to make that transition.  Anybody who can't see how much better Harkless is now than from the beginning of the year is nuts.   Staff has done a great job with him already in a few months.  One more year for him is key.  He needs to hit the weights hard in the offseason and work on his shooting and footwork a bit.

You are correct, its a major win for this staff to tell recruits that his first class yielded a lottery pick. I would not be shocked to see Moe test the waters this year and I don't blame him. If this was your normal watered down draft class as in years past, I would think he could go right now but what works in STJ favor is all the kids that stuck around in college waiting out the labor dispute.  Moe with his current skill set and body is no lock for Round 1 and a 3 year contract.

Moe is also a different kid, goes to STJ about 10 minutes from his home, and has a good head on his shoulders. I do feel he will take into consideration leaving STJ in good shape without him meaning he will stick around for next years class to arrive and Lavin to recruit his replacement  (Ish?)

We want him to get drafted in the lottery, and be a star in the league. That can happen, but I don't think it's even reasonable to mention it until he plays like an NBA player. Wes Johnson was one of the best BE players I've ever seen. He was also a 6'8 swingman like Harkless. Similar build. He's averaging 10 ppg in the league. He was pick #3.

Wes Johnson won Big East POY as a senior averaging 16pts 8.4 Rebs.  Mo Harkless is averaging 16pts 8.6 Rebs as a freshman.  Just to put things into perspective.   Mo is also an inch or two taller than Wes.  Like I said, Mo Harkless would be muuuuch better to stay another year and I'm pretty sure he will. I have no doubt he'd be successful in the league even if he didn't but it probably would take longer.

I dont like the fact that the article says the program is in turmoil and there are questions about Lavins health. Not good for the recruits to read.

That's the standard thing for people to say, when Lavin adds four more players to the 8 we have (including Branch), and is back coaching this year or next, they will make up something else to say.
